A colourful thermal screenshot is a clue. A matched, radiometric, traceable record is evidence your reviewer can interrogate.

Do not deliver a hotspot screenshot. Deliver a traceable thermal record.

A defensible Matrice 4T workflow preserves the 16-bit R-JPEG, a matched visible image, target identity, capture position, gain mode, emissivity assumption, environmental context and the analyst’s exception decision. The thermal image shows apparent surface temperature—not an automatic diagnosis. Capture controls and records are what let a qualified reviewer reproduce the interpretation.

  • 640 × 512 thermal sensor at 30 Hz.
  • 16-bit R-JPEG and 8-bit JPEG photo formats.
  • High gain: −20°C to 150°C measurement range.

  • Spot and area measurement functions.

These are official specifications, not a guarantee that every field reading equals true target temperature. Emissivity, reflections, atmospheric conditions, focus, range, angle and target size remain part of the measurement problem.

FIELD CAPTURE PROTOCOL

Six controls before the aircraft leaves the target

  1. Assign a target IDUse a site, asset and component naming convention before capture. “IMG_0042” is not enough when several panels, roofs or mechanical units look alike.
  2. Record environmental contextNote ambient conditions relevant to the inspection: wind, precipitation, solar loading, recent equipment state and anything that can create or erase a temperature contrast.
  3. Set gain for the expected rangeUse high gain for the tighter −20°C to 150°C range when appropriate; use low gain only when the target can exceed that range. Record the choice rather than switching without traceability.
  4. Control geometryKeep adequate target pixels, stable focus, repeatable distance and a viewing angle that reduces reflections. Capture a wider context frame before the close inspection view.
  5. Capture matched thermal and visible viewsUse the visible camera to preserve target identity, component condition and surrounding clues. The RGB image should make the thermal exception easy to locate later.
  6. Review before moving onCheck focus, saturation, occlusion and whether the target remains identifiable. Repeat the capture immediately if a reviewer would have to guess what the hot or cold region belongs to.

Safety limit: DJI lists no standard IP protection for the Matrice 4T. Do not turn a thermal data requirement into an unsafe wet-weather flight. The user manual also warns against exposing the infrared lens to strong energy sources such as the sun, lava or a laser beam.

KEEP THE MEASUREMENT DATA

Why the 16-bit R-JPEG is the evidence file

An 8-bit colourized JPEG is useful for presentation, but its palette is a rendered view. The R-JPEG retains radiometric information that DJI Thermal Analysis Tool 3 can read so the analyst can adjust measurement parameters, inspect spots or areas and compare exceptions after the flight. Preserve the original R-JPEG and treat exported screenshots or marked-up reports as derivatives.

ANALYZE WITHOUT OVERCLAIMING

A temperature reading is conditional, not absolute

Control Why it matters What to record
Emissivity Different materials emit infrared energy differently; shiny metal can reflect its surroundings. Material assumption and value used, plus any uncertainty.
Reflected / apparent temperature Reflections can make a surface appear hotter or colder than it is. Method or assumption used for the scene.
Atmospheric conditions Humidity, temperature and path length affect transmission, especially at longer ranges. Conditions and approximate range.
Target size A small component occupying too few pixels can be averaged with its background. Context and close view; note if measurement is qualitative only.
Operating state Load, runtime, flow and recent shutdown can change the thermal pattern. Equipment state and comparison baseline.

DJI’s published laboratory accuracy for the Matrice 4T is conditional: in high gain it is ±2°C or ±2%, whichever is greater; in low gain it is ±5°C or ±3%, whichever is greater. Those figures do not eliminate field uncertainty. Reports should separate observed apparent temperature, temperature difference, suspected cause and confirmed diagnosis.

Thermal data supports a maintenance or inspection decision; it does not replace an electrician, engineer, building specialist or other qualified professional where that expertise is required. The strongest report makes the next inspection or physical confirmation obvious.

The Matrice 4T’s published takeoff weight is above 250 g, so it must be registered in Canada. The pilot certificate, airspace authorization and operating-category requirements depend on the exact mission, location and proximity to people—not simply on the fact that the aircraft carries a thermal camera.
