What changes in real use
The decisive differences appear after the camera leaves the box: where footage lives, when framing is chosen and how cautiously runtime claims should be interpreted.
Storage: built-in certainty or removable-media flexibility?
Storage is the clearest architectural difference. Osmo Nano records to the camera’s internal memory. DJI lists 48GB available on the 64GB version and 107.6GB available on the 128GB version. The Vision Dock can export files to a microSD card, but it cannot turn that card into a direct-recording destination.
GO Ultra takes the opposite approach: it has no built-in storage, so a compatible card is mandatory. The benefit is a familiar removable-media workflow—stop, power down as instructed, swap a card and keep your media physically separated. The cost is one more compatibility and formatting check before the first shoot.
Framing: decide before or after recording?
Osmo Nano can automatically switch between horizontal and vertical recording based on camera orientation, and the user can lock the chosen aspect orientation. That is useful when the final channel is already known at capture time.
GO Ultra’s FreeFrame workflow is aimed at a different decision: record first, then choose supported framing during export. Insta360 states that FreeFrame effects must be exported through the Insta360 app or Studio. This flexibility is useful for one capture that may feed multiple social formats, but it also creates an app or desktop-export step that should be included in turnaround planning.
Battery: why the two 200-minute claims are not a tie
Both brands publish a 200-minute figure when the camera is used with its companion unit, but the test conditions are not identical. DJI tested Nano at 25°C while recording 1080p/24fps with RockSteady on, Wi-Fi off and the screen off. Insta360 tested GO Ultra at 25°C in Endurance Mode, recording 1080p/24fps with Wi-Fi and screen off. Treat both as controlled reference values, then budget for shorter runtime when using higher resolutions, active screens, wireless connections or colder Canadian conditions.
