Core workflow: complete coordinate, control and reconstruction QA in DJI Terra; preserve an untouched evidence set before creating the Modify project; keep the linked Terra task name and modelling-result folders in their original paths; edit only defects supported by the source imagery and project evidence; then deliver the untouched master, cleaned model, edit log, coordinate and format metadata, limitations, data-handling note and acceptance record. Cleanup improves presentation and usability—it must not be presented as proof of survey accuracy.
Compatibility gate: DJI says the visible-light 3D mesh workflow in Modify supports models reconstructed with DJI Terra V4.0.0 or later and does not currently support visible-light models from third-party modelling software. DJI documents point-cloud editing separately, so do not apply that mesh limitation to every point-cloud case.

Before opening DJI Modify: three gates
1. Evidence gate
Confirm that the raw images, Terra project, reconstruction outputs and project QA evidence are complete enough to explain the model. A cleaned mesh cannot recreate missing measurement evidence.
2. Coordinate gate
Confirm the required coordinate system, units and client conventions before cleanup. DJI says a Modify export retains the coordinate system used at import; Modify is not a coordinate-conversion step.
3. Compatibility gate
For the visible-light mesh path covered here, confirm Terra V4.0.0 or later. Also confirm Windows, NVIDIA GPU and constant-network requirements from the current DJI Modify FAQ before scheduling work.

A controlled Terra-to-Modify workflow
Finish Terra QA
Resolve the project’s coordinate, control-point, checkpoint, aerotriangulation and reconstruction questions before visual cleanup. If a project requires professional survey sign-off, that responsibility remains separate from mesh editing.
Preserve the evidence set before linking
Under your organization’s backup policy, preserve raw imagery, the Terra project and results, quality evidence and an untouched deliverable before creating the Modify project. This is an editorial control—not a DJI-mandated packing list.
Keep linked names and paths intact
After the Modify project is created, do not move, copy or rename the linked Terra modelling-result folders, and do not rename the Terra task. DJI warns that changes can make models or related files inaccessible.
Build a defect register
List each floating object, hole, vehicle, water area, texture problem or flattening candidate. Record whether it should be kept, removed or repaired, why, and which source evidence supports the decision.
Choose the right model level
DJI describes high-quality PLY or OBJ models for local flattening, hole filling and texture repair, and lower-quality B3DM or OSGB models for broader floating-part and water-surface work. Keep those use cases distinct.
Repair conservatively
Review floating parts at multiple zoom levels because DJI’s removal is view-dependent. Treat flattening as approximate, inspect cross-block seams, and check whether a filled hole received evidence-based texture or only a solid colour.
Review before render
Compare edited areas against source images, the untouched master and project QA evidence. Modify creates a historical version before rendering, but that feature is not a complete audit trail or backup policy.
Render and export deliberately
DJI lists B3DM, OSGB, PLY, OBJ and S3MB as default 3D model exports. Select the client’s required format, then verify the export opens, retains the intended coordinate system and contains the expected blocks and textures.
Decide whether cloud sharing is allowed
DJI says data uploaded from countries and regions outside mainland China is stored on US servers and coordinate information is removed before upload. For a Canadian project, confirm the client’s cross-border data rules; coordinate removal does not make recognizable geometry or textures anonymous.
Deliver two versions and a record
Provide the untouched master and cleaned view model separately, plus format, CRS and units metadata, edit log, QA and limitations, data-handling note and client acceptance. Label which model is suitable for presentation and which evidence supports decisions.

What is the difference between DJI Terra and DJI Modify?
DJI Terra creates mapping and 3D reconstruction outputs, while DJI Modify is used to edit point clouds and repair 3D mesh defects. In this workflow, coordinate and control-point QA should be completed before cleanup. Modify does not replace the original survey validation.
Can DJI Modify edit a visible-light model from third-party software?
Currently, no. DJI says its visible-light 3D model workflow supports models reconstructed with DJI Terra V4.0.0 or later. This limitation should not be generalized to every point-cloud workflow, which DJI documents separately.
Can I move or rename the DJI Terra result folder after creating a Modify project?
Do not move, copy or rename the linked Terra modelling-result folders, and do not rename the Terra task. DJI warns that changing these names or paths can make the model or related files inaccessible. Moving the Modify project folder itself removes it from the project list, so it must be imported again.
Does cleaning a model in DJI Modify improve survey accuracy?
Not by itself. Modify edits the model’s geometry or appearance; DJI says flattening creates an approximately flat surface from surrounding meshes rather than flattening to the ground, and cross-block flattening can produce height differences. Preserve the original QA evidence and disclose edited areas before using a cleaned model for decisions.
Which 3D model formats can DJI Modify export?
DJI lists B3DM, OSGB, PLY, OBJ and S3MB as the default 3D model export formats. Confirm the required format with the client before rendering and exporting. Point-cloud exports use a separate format list.
Does DJI Modify change a model’s coordinate system?
DJI says the exported model keeps the coordinate system used at import. Modify does not currently support 3D models whose coordinate systems were adjusted with a seven-parameter transformation, so verify the coordinate-system workflow before editing.
Where is a DJI Modify cloud-shared model stored for a Canadian project?
DJI states that model data from countries and regions outside mainland China is stored on US servers. Under that published rule, a Canadian upload would be stored in the United States. Confirm the client’s cross-border data requirements before using cloud sharing.
Does removing coordinates before cloud upload make a model anonymous?
No such conclusion should be assumed. DJI says coordinate information is removed before a model is uploaded through Modify, but geometry, textures and recognizable site features may still reveal the location or asset. Treat cloud sharing as a client data-governance decision.
