Quick answer

Use Matrice 400 for mission flexibility, Matrice 4E or 4T for portable field work, and Matrice 4D or 4TD with Dock 3 for repeated remote missions.

SpeedyDrone’s most current DJI Enterprise lineup separates into three practical tiers: a heavy modular flagship, compact integrated-sensor aircraft, and dock-ready automation systems.

DJI Matrice 400 is the most capable platform when the mission needs long endurance, heavy or multiple payloads, LiDAR, photogrammetry, advanced inspection or custom integration.

DJI Matrice 4E and Matrice 4T are better when portability, fast deployment and integrated sensors matter more than payload flexibility. The 4E is optimized for mapping; the 4T is optimized for thermal, public safety and inspection.

DJI Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD with Dock 3 make sense when the same location must be inspected repeatedly, remote launch is valuable, or a fixed or vehicle-mounted drone-in-a-box system can reduce travel and response time.

Start with the mission, not the airframe

Define the required data product, target, operating distance, weather, airspace, bystander environment, crew, software, reporting workflow and regulatory pathway before choosing a drone. A lower-cost aircraft that cannot produce the required deliverable is not a saving.

Read maximum figures correctly: flight time, payload, charging, wind and transmission figures are measured under stated conditions. Payload, temperature, altitude, wind, battery age, accessories, obstacle avoidance, flight profile and reserve policy will reduce practical mission endurance.

DJI Matrice 400 SP Plus enterprise drone from SpeedyDrone Canada

Enterprise flagship

DJI Matrice 400 is the platform for payload-driven programs.

Matrice 400 is the right starting point when the sensor or payload defines the mission.

DJI specifies up to 59 minutes of forward flight, up to 53 minutes of hover, a 6 kg maximum payload and a 15.8 kg maximum takeoff weight. Its IP55 rating, -20°C to 50°C operating range and 25 m/s maximum horizontal speed support more demanding field programs than compact enterprise aircraft.

The airframe supports DJI and compatible third-party payloads for thermal inspection, zoom observation, LiDAR, photogrammetry, spotlighting, loudspeaker work, edge computing and specialized integration. Matrice 400 also adds rotating LiDAR, upward LiDAR, full-colour low-light fisheye sensing and six-direction mmWave radar for power-line-level obstacle sensing.

The buying decision must include payload, gimbal configuration, batteries, charging station, controller, care plan, software, data pipeline and operator procedures. The aircraft price alone does not define the deployed system cost.

6 kgMaximum payload under stated conditions
IP55Aircraft ingress-protection rating
7Up to seven payloads in supported configurations
DJI Matrice 4E mapping drone from SpeedyDrone Canada

Compact mapping system

Matrice 4E is the most efficient compact entry into current DJI enterprise mapping.

Matrice 4E combines a mapping camera, telephoto inspection cameras, laser rangefinding, RTK and intelligent route tools in a portable aircraft.

The 4/3-inch 20 MP wide camera uses a mechanical shutter and supports 0.5-second interval capture. The 70 mm and 168 mm equivalent telephoto cameras can document details without requiring the aircraft to move as close to every target.

It is a strong fit for surveying, construction progress, stockpile measurement, mining, site documentation and routine infrastructure capture. Smart 3D Capture can generate a rough model on the controller and help create more targeted routes around irregular structures.

The major limitation is weather protection. DJI states that Matrice 4E and Matrice 4T have no standard protection level and should avoid water. Canadian teams that need repeatable operation in more difficult weather should compare Matrice 4D or Matrice 400.

DJI Matrice 4T thermal enterprise drone from SpeedyDrone Canada

Compact thermal and response system

Matrice 4T is the portable response platform for thermal, zoom and night operations.

Matrice 4T puts the sensors most response and inspection teams need into one compact aircraft.

The integrated payload includes 48 MP wide, medium-tele and tele cameras, a 640×512 thermal camera, NIR auxiliary light and a laser rangefinder with a manufacturer-stated maximum measurement range of 1,800 m under defined reflectivity conditions.

Smart detection can assist with identifying vehicles, vessels and subjects in supported workflows. Cruise, FlyTo, observation-area recording and map overlays can reduce pilot workload during search, inspection and situational-awareness missions.

Matrice 4T is a strong choice for utilities, firefighting support, search and rescue, law enforcement, private security, roofing, facility inspection and night operations. It is not waterproof, and thermal readings still require correct emissivity, distance, angle, environment and interpretation.

Dock-ready aircraft

Matrice 4D and 4TD are not simply weatherproof versions of 4E and 4T.

DJI Matrice 4D

Matrice 4D is the mapping and detailed-inspection aircraft for Dock 3. It retains the 4/3-inch 20 MP mechanical-shutter wide camera, 48 MP medium tele, 48 MP tele and laser rangefinder.

Compared with Matrice 4E, it is larger, IP55-rated, uses low-noise anti-ice propellers and increases the maximum forward-flight test result to 54 minutes. It can also operate as a standalone aircraft with RC Plus 2 Enterprise.

Best fit: repeated construction progress, stockpile capture, industrial inspection, perimeter documentation and remote site mapping.

View Matrice 4D

DJI Matrice 4TD

Matrice 4TD is the thermal, public-safety and inspection aircraft for Dock 3. It combines visible zoom cameras, a 640×512 thermal camera, NIR auxiliary light and laser rangefinding.

Its IP55 protection, anti-ice propellers, -20°C to 50°C operating range and upward gimbal capability in supported angles make it better suited to repeated field missions than the compact 4T.

Best fit: automated thermal inspection, substations, solar assets, emergency response, security, wildfire support and night operations.

DJI Dock 3 remote enterprise drone system from SpeedyDrone Canada

Drone-in-a-box operations

DJI Dock 3 converts an aircraft purchase into an operating system project.

Dock 3 can support fixed or vehicle-mounted deployments with Matrice 4D or 4TD, but successful deployment depends on far more than installing the hardware.

The dock is IP56-rated, operates from -30°C to 50°C, includes environmental sensors and charges the aircraft from 15% to 95% in a manufacturer-stated 27 minutes at 25°C. FlightHub 2 supports mission planning, remote operation, data handling and fleet management.

Site selection must address power, network, GNSS, transmission, physical security, drainage, lightning protection, maintenance access, local weather, emergency procedures and the regulatory pathway. Vehicle-mounted deployment adds calibration, vibration, parking, communications and operating-area considerations.

The SpeedyDrone listing showed CAD $21,509 when checked. Confirm whether the quote includes aircraft, installation, commissioning, networking, software, D-RTK equipment, accessories, training and ongoing support.

Total ownership cost

Budget for the deployed capability, not only the drone.

Enterprise buyers often underestimate the cost of software, batteries, data, training, approvals and support. The correct comparison is cost per reliable mission or deliverable.

  • Aircraft, controller and selected enterprise package
  • Mission payload, gimbal connector and payload-specific accessories
  • Enough batteries and charging capacity for the duty cycle
  • D-RTK station, network RTK or survey-control workflow where needed
  • DJI Terra, FlightHub 2, DJI Modify or third-party software
  • Computers, storage, cloud services, cybersecurity and retention policy
  • Training, flight reviews, recurrent proficiency and scenario exercises
  • Registration, operating certificate, declarations, airspace authorization or SFOC work
  • Insurance, privacy review, legal review and internal governance
  • Cases, landing zones, lighting, speaker, parachute or other mission accessories
  • Maintenance, firmware control, battery lifecycle and replacement reserves
  • Dock site power, network, foundation, security, installation and commissioning

Build the business case around avoided cost and improved decisions

Measure reduced travel, fewer shutdowns, less work at height, faster response, increased inspection frequency, earlier defect detection, faster survey turnaround and better documentation. Do not assume a maximum flight-time figure equals a proportional productivity gain.

Canada compliance

Enterprise equipment does not create operating authority.

Registration and pilot certificate

Transport Canada requires drones weighing at least 250 g to be registered and marked. The pilot must hold the certificate appropriate to the operation and carry proof when required.

Advanced and Level 1 Complex

Advanced operations cover additional privileges such as controlled airspace and certain operations near people with an eligible drone. Level 1 Complex permits defined lower-risk BVLOS operations under specific airspace, population, aircraft-declaration and operator-certificate conditions.

SFOC and special operations

Operations beyond Basic, Advanced or Level 1 Complex rules may require an SFOC-RPAS. This can include higher-complexity BVLOS, aerodrome environments, hazardous payloads or other special conditions.

Dock 3 compliance must be designed with the operating concept

A dock can technically launch and recover a drone remotely, but the legal pathway depends on where, how and by whom it is operated. Confirm pilot certification, RPAS Operator Certificate requirements, drone declarations, airspace, population density, visual-observer model, command-and-control links, emergency procedures and whether an SFOC is required.

Enterprise procurement checklist

Answer these questions before requesting the quote.

  • What exact decision or deliverable must the drone support?
  • Is the mission mapping, thermal, zoom inspection, LiDAR, public safety or automation?
  • What ground sampling distance, thermal sensitivity, zoom detail or measurement accuracy is required?
  • Will the aircraft fly in rain, freezing conditions, heat, dust or high wind?
  • Does the program need a portable case, vehicle response or fixed dock?
  • How many batteries and chargers are required for the daily sortie rate?
  • Which software creates the final report, model, map or incident record?
  • What data-security, residency, access-control and retention requirements apply?
  • Which pilot certificate, operator certificate, declaration, authorization or SFOC is required?
  • Who maintains batteries, firmware, logs, payloads and airworthiness records?
  • What training, recurrent proficiency and emergency exercises are required?
  • What support, spare-parts and replacement-time commitments are needed?

Final recommendation

Choose the smallest system that reliably completes the mission—and leaves room to scale.

Matrice 4E is the best compact mapping starting point. Matrice 4T is the best compact thermal and response starting point. Matrice 4D and 4TD are the correct step when Dock 3 automation and weather protection justify the system cost. Matrice 400 is the flagship for payload-driven, long-endurance and integrated enterprise programs.

For a first deployment, prove the workflow with a defined mission and measurable outcome before scaling to multiple aircraft or a dock network. For an established program, design the aircraft, payload, software, training and compliance pathway as one operating system.
