World Robot Conference 2026: Are Humanoid Robots Ready for Real Work—or Still Winning Demos?
Beijing's show floor makes the progress visible. For Canadian buyers, the harder question is whether a robot can repeat a defined task safely, under customer control, with an operating and support plan that survives after the cameras leave.

Some humanoids are ready for bounded research, interaction, data-collection and supervised demonstration work. That does not make them finished autonomous employees. Buy against a mission and an acceptance test—not the robot's best ten-second clip.
A busy show floor—and the industry's central tension
The 2026 World Robot Conference opened in Beijing on August 19 and runs through August 23. AP reported that organizers expected roughly 3,000 products across the five-day event. A Beijing government preview published before opening had described more than 2,000 exhibits from over 300 exhibitors, including more than 150 product debuts.

The breadth matters. Robotics is not moving along one track. Dynamic humanoid motion, factory manipulation, mobile inspection, social interaction and embodied-AI development each have different measures of success.
AP's opening-day report captured both sides of the moment. Unitree robots boxed, danced and played table tennis. Elsewhere, a helper robot spent several minutes attempting to fold a shirt and did not finish the task. That failure does not invalidate the field. It shows why a staged capability and a dependable workflow are different claims.
Unitree also began trading on Shanghai's STAR Market on August 19, with a sharp first-day share-price increase. SpeedyDrone covered the offering separately on August 13. Here, the listing is relevant only as evidence of investor attention—not as proof that any robot can meet a customer's acceptance criteria.
Demo performance vs deployment performance
A demonstration can establish that a motion, perception stack or interaction is possible under prepared conditions. Deployment asks whether the whole system still works when the objects, people, lighting, floor, network and schedule change.

One successful run is the beginning of evaluation
Before a robot becomes a business system, the task has to move through progressively less controlled tests. Each stage should have written pass/fail criteria, not only a video.
The most valuable question after a demo is simple: what changes when the manufacturer leaves and our team operates it?
Prove the motion
Show that the platform can perform the intended action under controlled conditions.
Add real variation
Test actual objects, routes, operators, network conditions and interruptions.
Measure pass rates
Define cycle time, intervention rate, safe-stop behaviour and recoverability.
Own the workflow
Train the customer team and document charging, startup, shutdown and exceptions.
Keep it running
Confirm parts, software ownership, updates, diagnostics and escalation paths.
What buyers should actually evaluate
The right checklist starts with the task and the facility. It does not start with a viral move or a total joint count.
Repeatability and intervention rate
Ask how many consecutive cycles were tested, what counted as a failure and how often a person had to reset, reposition or teleoperate the robot.
SDK and development access
Confirm the exact edition, interfaces, documentation, licensing and control boundaries. A base model and its EDU or development edition may not provide the same access.
Manipulation and perception
Specify hands or grippers, force sensing, cameras, range sensors and the object set. “Has hands” does not establish grasp success for the customer's parts.
Battery and charging workflow
Model useful operating time, charging or battery swaps, thermal limits and staffing. The relevant number is productive time in the intended duty cycle.
Emergency stop and safe recovery
Test local and remote stop controls, link loss, restart conditions and manual recovery. A stop is only useful when operators can reach it and know what happens next.
Fall, collision and facility risk
Account for robot mass, reach, pinch points, floor transitions, stairs, bystanders and protected space. Dynamic movement raises the consequences of a poor boundary.
Operator training and ownership
Define who can start, supervise, recover, update and maintain the system. A manufacturer-operated show is not the same product as a customer-owned operating procedure.
Parts, support and software integration
Confirm spares, repair logistics, response path, data export, APIs, network requirements and integration responsibility before treating the robot as production infrastructure.

These are starting directions, not automatic recommendations. The exact configuration, software entitlement, payload, facility and support scope still need written confirmation.
Name check: Unitree G1 and AGIBOT G1 are different products from different manufacturers. Procurement records should always state the manufacturer, exact model, edition and configuration.

Which changes in the environment are in scope?
Who owns application development?
How are stops and recovery tested?
What data must the system produce?
What training does the operator receive?
