DJI Osmo Action 6 vs Action 5 Pro
Action 6 is the stronger choice for creators who need more low-light flexibility, 8K reframing, square 4K capture or HorizonSteady at 4K. Action 5 Pro remains highly competitive for daylight sports, diving, 4K120 slow motion, direct DJI microphone use and long battery life.
Upgrade for the imaging workflow—not the battery.
The meaningful Action 6 upgrades are the 1/1.1-inch square sensor, f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture, 8K30, 4K Custom 3840×3840 and HorizonSteady up to 4K60. Battery, screens, waterproofing, 4K120 and OsmoAudio remain broadly comparable.
What actually changed?
Action 6 delivered the larger sensor and variable aperture, but not every rumoured feature became official. The table below separates confirmed upgrades from inherited Action 5 Pro strengths.

The square sensor is the most practical creator upgrade.
The square 1/1.1-inch sensor gives Action 6 more flexibility before a final aspect ratio is chosen. Record a 4K Custom square master and crop it into horizontal, vertical or square outputs.
8K is useful—but conditional
Action 6 records 8K at 24, 25 or 30fps in 16:9. Stabilization, field of view, colour and editing options are more restricted than in standard 4K modes. Use it when you genuinely need reframing or high-resolution delivery.
f/2.0 helps low light. f/4 changes close-up and night-light effects.
The f/2.0 setting can help reduce the ISO required in darker scenes compared with Action 5 Pro's fixed f/2.8 lens. At f/4, DJI specifies a focus range from 20cm to infinity, and point light sources can produce six-point starbursts.
Variable aperture does not turn an action camera into a full-frame portrait camera. Its strongest benefits are exposure flexibility, closer focus and creative starburst control.
The upgrade is 4K HorizonSteady.
Both cameras use RockSteady 3.0 and 3.0+. Action 6 raises full HorizonSteady to 4K60, while Action 5 Pro limits it to 2.7K60.
Core electronic stabilization generation is shared.
Full horizon lock with a 4K master.
Still strong for cycling, skiing and helmet footage.
Do not upgrade for battery, screens or waterproofing.
Action 5 Pro already delivers most of the durability and usability features retained by Action 6.
Both use a 1950mAh battery and publish a 240-minute laboratory result at 1080p24 with RockSteady enabled, Wi-Fi off and the screens off.

Upgrade when:
- You frequently shoot low light and can use f/2.0.
- You need one square master for YouTube, Reels and Shorts.
- You want 8K for crop-heavy delivery.
- You need 4K HorizonSteady.
- You shoot products or city lights and will use f/4 or the Macro Lens.
Keep Action 5 Pro when:
- You mainly record daylight sports in 4K.
- RockSteady already meets your needs.

Both are rated to 20m without a case and 60m with the compatible waterproof case, provided the battery cover, USB-C cover and glass lens cover are correctly secured. DJI recommends the case for long-duration or high-pressure underwater use.
Should an Action 5 Pro owner upgrade?
