A DJI Agras operator must follow the aerial spray buffer zone on the current registered pesticide label. Under Health Canada’s SPN2026-02, using an RPAS instead of a helicopter, flying lower or programming a more precise route does not automatically create a smaller buffer. Health Canada currently applies the labelled buffer zones for conventionally piloted rotary aircraft to RPAS work. A smaller distance is only defensible when an applicable label or an authorized, properly documented buffer-zone modification allows it, and every provincial, territorial, permit and local restriction still has to be met.
The aircraft does not set the legal spray distance.
Agras can control height, speed, flow, route geometry and spray on/off points. Those controls help execute a compliant plan; they do not replace the plan’s regulatory source.
Measure from direct application to the nearest downwind sensitive habitat.
Health Canada defines a spray buffer zone as the distance between the point of direct pesticide application and the nearest downwind boundary of a sensitive habitat, unless the product label says otherwise.
The protected habitat may be aquatic, terrestrial or both. Examples in Health Canada’s guidance include lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands, riparian zones, shelterbelts, woodlots, hedgerows, grasslands and shrublands.
A spray buffer is not automatically the same thing as a property-line setback, a distance from a residence, an aviation separation requirement or a permit condition.

RPAS spray-drift research is developing, but Health Canada says the available evidence is not yet strong enough to produce reliable RPAS-specific drift curves for general label use.

RTK and route planning can improve repeatability, but the operator must place the line at the correct legal boundary.
Does not equal pesticide permission
Agras specifications describe the machine. The registered product label and applicable regulators govern the application.
Do not assume every Agras operation can use the calculator.
Treat calculator use as a product- and operation-specific verification question, not an automatic yes.
Health Canada’s calculator can modify labelled buffer zones for qualifying field and aerial applications when the label contains specified ASAE Fine, Medium or Coarse droplet-category wording. It does not apply to ASAE Very Fine or Very Coarse droplets.
There is an important RPAS caveat: the calculator’s current application-method description defines an aerial sprayer as fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft and does not separately identify RPAS. Before relying on a calculated reduction for an Agras operation, confirm that the calculator pathway applies to the exact label, spray system and RPAS use.
One field can carry several different legal boundaries.
Health Canada establishes the pesticide label. Provinces, territories, municipalities and permits can add restrictions, qualifications or site-specific conditions.

Build the route around the protected boundary.
This example deliberately uses no chemical name or distance. Those values must come from the current label and the exact operation.
- Confirm that the product, crop and use permit aerial application and do not prohibit RPAS.
- Map aquatic and terrestrial habitats, including the nearest downwind boundary.
- Apply the current rotary-aircraft label buffer or a verified, documented modification.
- Place the spray-off boundary, turns and return paths so direct application stays outside the protected strip.
- Locate the refill and loading area, crew and controller workflow with wind and contamination control in mind.
- Recheck wind, weather, habitat status and records on the day of application.

Does flying a DJI Agras lower reduce the pesticide label buffer zone?
No. SPN2026-02 requires RPAS operations to use the applicable aerial label directions and the spray buffer zones established for conventionally piloted rotary aircraft. Lower flight can affect drift and execution, but it does not automatically amend the labelled distance.
Which aerial buffer zone applies to RPAS pesticide spraying in Canada?
Under SPN2026-02, RPAS operations must currently apply the labelled spray buffer zones for conventionally piloted rotary aircraft. Operators must still confirm the current label, exact registered use and every provincial, territorial or permit requirement.
Is a spray buffer zone the same as a property-line setback?
No. Health Canada defines a spray buffer zone in relation to direct pesticide application and the nearest downwind boundary of a sensitive habitat, unless the label states otherwise. Property, residence, municipal, permit and aviation boundaries are separate requirements.
Can every Agras operation use the Health Canada Buffer Zone Calculator?
No. The calculator has label, droplet-category, weather and configuration conditions. Its current application-method description does not separately identify RPAS, so operators should confirm that the tool applies to the exact RPAS job before relying on a reduced distance.
What record is required when the calculator reduces a buffer zone?
Health Canada says the applicator must retain the Buffer Zone Summary page for at least one year after the application. Provincial, territorial, permit or business records may add further information or a longer retention period.
Can changing the Agras droplet setting reduce the buffer?
Not by itself. The selected droplet category must comply with the current product label. A calculator modification, where applicable, depends on the label wording and complete set of required inputs; changing one controller setting does not authorize a shorter buffer.
What if a provincial setback is larger than the label buffer?
The operation must satisfy all applicable requirements. A larger provincial, territorial, municipal or permit restriction is not displaced by a smaller federal label buffer.
