🎬 EPISODE 12 — Editing Drone Footage Like a Creator

Series: Learn Drones From Zero → Pro
By SpeedyDrone Canada

🎨 1. Basic Color Correction (Start Here)

Even beginner drone videos look better with just a little tweaking.

Key Adjustments:

  • Exposure – fix overly dark or bright shots

  • Contrast – adds depth

  • Saturation – boosts colors without overdoing it

  • White Balance – avoid weird color casts

🔧 Use free tools like CapCut, VN Editor, or DaVinci Resolve (free version)
🧪 Practice small adjustments — not filters!

🔓 2. D-Log M Workflow (Simple + Pro)

Many DJI drones shoot in D-Log M — a flat color profile meant for post-production.

What Is It?

D-Log M captures more dynamic range but looks washed out out of the box.

🟢 Simple Workflow (for non-editors):

  1. Import video into CapCut or VN

  2. Add DJI’s official LUT for your drone

  3. Tweak exposure and contrast slightly

  4. Export in 4K

🔵 Pro Workflow (DaVinci / Premiere Pro):

  1. Convert D-Log M using color space transform

  2. Apply custom LUT or manual grading

  3. Use curves and masks for highlights/shadows

  4. Adjust saturation and contrast precisely

💡 Best used when your video has sky + shadows + skin tones

🎞️ 3. LUTs — When to Use and When Not To

LUT = Look Up Table = a pre-made color grade

✅ When to Use:

  • Matching different shots

  • Applying a known cinematic look

  • Speeding up workflows

❌ When NOT to Use:

  • When your footage is already well-lit

  • When you don’t adjust exposure first

  • When LUTs crush highlights or blacks

🧠 Think of LUTs like makeup — helpful, but only when applied correctly.

🎧 4. Syncing Ground Audio + Drone Video

Drones capture great visuals — but poor audio.
To elevate storytelling, record sound on the ground, then sync later.

Workflow:

  1. Use phone or camera mic to record voice or ambient sounds

  2. Import both audio and drone video into editor

  3. Use waveform alignment or clap sync

  4. Trim + adjust volume for storytelling

🪄 Tip:

  • Use natural sounds (wind, birds, crowds)

  • Or add music with low background SFX

  • Don’t overdo dramatic music for simple scenes

✂️ 5. Top Editing Apps (Free + Paid)

App Platform Best For
CapCut iOS/Android/Desktop Fast edits + D-Log LUT support
VN Editor iOS/Android Great for YouTube Shorts
DaVinci Resolve PC/Mac Best free pro editor
Final Cut / Premiere Pro Mac / PC Pro-level production

✅ Recap: Edit Like a Creator

🎯 Even a 10-second drone clip can tell a story — with the right edit.

✔️ Fix lighting
✔️ Add color grading (LUTs or manual)
✔️ Add audio that fits the mood
✔️ Export in 4K with good compression
