🧭 EPISODE 4 — Learning to Fly: Slow and Safe Training Plan

🧭 EPISODE 4 — Learning to Fly: Slow and Safe Training Plan

Series: Learn Drones From Zero → Pro
By SpeedyDrone Canada

🕹️ 1. Why Start Slow?

Learning to fly a drone isn’t about speed — it’s about control.
Even the best DJI drones will only perform well if the pilot stays calm and precise.

That’s why we designed this slow-paced training plan — to build:

✅ Muscle memory
✅ Confidence
✅ Safety habits
✅ Smooth, cinematic flying skills

🚁 2. Ground Rules for Practice Sessions

✅ Choose a Safe Location

  • Big open field, empty park, or lot

  • No trees, people, cars, or wires nearby

  • Calm weather (no strong wind or rain)

✅ Check Your Gear

  • Fully charged drone + controller

  • Remove gimbal protector

  • SD card inserted

  • DJI Fly App says “Ready to Fly”

🌀 3. Practice Drill 1: Hover Like a Pro

Goal: Stay in one spot with no drifting

  1. Take off to about 1.5 meters (5 feet)

  2. Let go of all sticks

  3. Use gentle micro-movements to hold position

  4. Practice for 1 full minute

  5. Land gently

🔁 Do this 3–5 times. Your drone should feel like it’s on a string.

⬆️⬇️ 4. Practice Drill 2: Slow Forward and Backward

Goal: Control movement without sudden jerks

  1. Take off to 2 meters (6.5 feet)

  2. Push right stick forward slowly → stop

  3. Push backward slowly → stop

  4. Repeat 5 times each direction

  5. Land smoothly

🎯 Focus on precision, not speed.

➡️⬅️ 5. Practice Drill 3: Sideways Sliding (Strafing)

Goal: Understand lateral movement

  1. Take off and hover

  2. Push right stick left → stop

  3. Push right → stop

  4. Fly in a small square: forward → right → back → left

  5. Repeat

🚘 Think of this as drifting in the air — smooth and flat.

🔄 6. Practice Drill 4: Rotate in Place (Yaw)

Goal: Control the nose without drifting

  1. Take off and hover

  2. Push left stick left to rotate the drone

  3. Then rotate right

  4. Stay in one spot while spinning slowly

  5. Combine with forward/backward later

📸 Useful when you want to rotate the camera without moving the drone’s body.

🛬 7. Practice Drill 5: Controlled Landing

Goal: Land precisely and safely

  1. Slowly descend using left stick down

  2. Hold until the drone gently touches the ground

  3. Motors will stop automatically

  4. Repeat 3 times

🎯 Try to land in a specific marked spot (like a landing pad).

💪 8. Your First 10 Flights: Confidence Workout Plan

Here’s a progressive workout plan you can repeat daily.
Each session = ~10 minutes

Flight Focus Notes
1 Hover + land Basic control, no movement
2 Forward/backward Add speed slowly
3 Side-to-side Practice squares
4 Hover + yaw Spin slowly in place
5 Combine all Move in figure-8
6 Smooth transitions Go from one movement to another
7 Add altitude changes Try flying higher and descending gently
8 Precision landing Use landing pad or marker
9 Fly longer route Trace a rectangle or triangle
10 Freestyle Have fun + record a short video

After 10 flights, you’ll be ready for real-world flying and basic video shots.

🔄 Bonus Tips

  • Always use Normal Mode (not Sport)

  • Practice with Beginner Mode if available

  • Always face the drone forward — flying in reverse is harder

  • Review your footage afterward to see how smooth you are
