A headline such as “the U.S. bans Unitree robots” is attention-grabbing, but it is not an accurate description of the FCC action. The decision is broader than one manufacturer, narrower than a blanket robot ban, and focused on the equipment-authorization pathway for covered equipment in the United States.

What Did the FCC Actually Change?

On July 28, 2026, the FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau added “foreign-produced advanced robotic devices” to the agency’s Covered List. The entry includes an exception for advanced robotic devices granted Conditional Approval by the U.S. Department of War.

Being placed on the Covered List matters because covered equipment is prohibited from receiving FCC equipment authorization. That authorization is normally required before radio-frequency devices can be marketed or imported into the United States. For robotics platforms with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, radio controllers or other transmitters, this can directly affect whether a new model can enter the U.S. market.

The FCC linked the decision to supply-chain vulnerability, cybersecurity and critical-infrastructure security. The bigger story is that buyers can no longer evaluate advanced robots only as mechanical products. What data will it collect?

List cameras, LiDAR, microphones, telemetry, mapping, localization and any personal, proprietary or operational data.

How will it connect?

Decide whether it needs the public Internet, a dedicated VLAN, an isolated network or a completely offline workflow.

Where will data be processed and stored?

Understand what remains on the robot, what moves to a local workstation and what may be transmitted to external services.

How are updates handled?

Ask about firmware sources, update delivery, support lifecycle, release notes, access controls and the ability to validate changes.

Could the deployment become sensitive?

Consider whether the robot may later enter government, defence, critical-infrastructure or regulated research environments.
