DJI Lito 1 vs Neo 2: who should fly the camera?

Both are approachable DJI drones with 4K/60fps video and obstacle-sensing assistance. Their real difference is the job: Lito 1 is a traditional camera drone you deliberately pilot; Neo 2 is a compact creator drone designed to launch quickly, follow you and bring itself back to your palm.

Quick answer

Buy DJI Lito 1 if you want the stronger traditional aerial-camera package: RC-N3 control in the standard C$419 listing, a 48MP 1/2-inch camera, 3-axis gimbal, RAW photos, longer maximum flight time and deliberate route-building. Buy DJI Neo 2 if your priority is getting yourself into the frame with less setup: palm takeoff and return, gesture control, SelfieShot, faster ActiveTrack, full-coverage propeller guards and 49GB of internal storage.

Neither is simply “the beginner drone.” The right beginner choice depends on whether you want to learn to fly a camera or ask a camera to fly around you.

The category decision

The biggest difference is who does the flying

Lito 1: pilot-first

You hold the RC-N3, watch the live view and choose the aircraft's path. That makes Lito 1 better suited to planned reveals, orbits, establishing shots, panoramas and flights where the camera's movement is the creative decision.

  • Traditional dual-stick control is the default experience
  • 3-axis mechanical gimbal supports controlled aerial motion
  • Longer sessions give you more time to compose and repeat shots

Neo 2: subject-first

You can launch from your palm, pick an automated capture mode and let the drone frame or follow you. That makes Neo 2 more natural for solo travel clips, family moments, running, cycling and social content.

  • Palm, gesture, app, remote and motion-control workflows
  • SelfieShot and ActiveTrack reduce the need for a second operator
  • Full-coverage propeller guards make close-range use more approachable

Camera and movement

Both say 4K/60—but they are not the same camera tool

Lito 1 gives the pilot more image-making room

Lito 1's 48MP 1/2-inch sensor, brighter f/1.8 lens, JPEG/DNG photo support and 3-axis gimbal make it the more convincing choice for buyers who care about aerial stills, repeated camera moves and footage that stays mechanically level as the aircraft changes direction.

The practical distinction is not that every Lito clip will automatically look better. It is that the platform gives you more tools for composing and controlling a shot. The 3-axis gimbal aligns with planned forward, sideways and orbiting movement; the longer flight window gives you time to rehearse.

Neo 2 is optimized for getting a usable shot of you

Neo 2 combines a 12MP 1/2-inch sensor, f/2.2 lens, 2-axis gimbal and electronic stabilization. Its imaging system is paired with automated framing rather than positioned as a tiny substitute for a conventional camera drone. A successfully tracked running clip can be more valuable than a technically stronger camera that never gets launched.

Buyer translation: choose Lito 1 when the aircraft path and camera angle are the creative work. Choose Neo 2 when the action is the creative work and the drone's job is to keep you framed.

Time in the air

19 minutes versus 36 minutes changes the rhythm

DJI's maximum figures are up to 19 minutes for Neo 2 and up to 36 minutes for Lito 1 with the standard battery. Lito 1 can reach a claimed 52 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus, but that battery pushes the aircraft above 249 g. Wind, temperature, repeated acceleration, recording settings, battery age and the reserve needed for a safe return all reduce usable time.

Lito 1's advantage

You can scout a route, adjust exposure, repeat a reveal and still keep a sensible landing reserve. For landscape work or a day built around flying, fewer battery interruptions matter.

Neo 2's advantage

Shorter flights fit quick capture: launch, record a follow or selfie sequence, return to palm and move on. A multi-battery combo is the better fit if you expect repeated sessions away from power.

Sensing and responsibility

LiDAR and propeller guards help—but do not make Neo 2 autonomous

Front view of DJI Neo 2 showing its camera, sensors and full-coverage propeller guards
Product image: Neo 2's compact guarded airframe.

Both aircraft offer omnidirectional monocular vision assistance and downward infrared sensing. Neo 2 adds forward-facing LiDAR and surrounds its propellers with guards, a combination that better matches close-range tracking and palm-based use. Lito 1's sensing supports a more conventional camera-drone workflow.

No sensing system can identify every thin branch, wire, transparent surface or low-texture object in every light condition. Tracking can also lose a subject. DJI describes these systems as aids—not replacements for pilot judgment and control. Keep the aircraft in sight, choose an open route and be prepared to stop or take over.

Neo 2's automation lowers setup friction; it does not transfer responsibility away from the operator. That distinction matters most when filming around people, trails, buildings or moving subjects.

Hands-free creation

Palm takeoff, gesture control and SelfieShot are Neo 2's real moat

Neo 2 can be pointed toward you, launched from an open palm and returned to your palm in supported conditions. Gesture control lets you adjust its position or distance without holding a remote, while SelfieShot automatically shifts among personal framing styles. ActiveTrack adds a Cycling option and is designed for smoother, faster subject following.

That workflow changes who can realistically capture footage. A runner does not have to set down a backpack and unfold a controller for every short clip. A parent can capture a family moment without first planning a flight path. A solo traveller can become the subject instead of spending the whole flight behind a screen.

There are conditions: palm operations should be performed carefully in suitable wind, with hands clear of the propellers; gesture performance depends on lighting, subject visibility, distance and the scene. For precise manual flight, the phone's virtual controls are not equivalent to a traditional remote.

Storage and controls

49GB internal storage versus a microSD-first workflow

Neo 2's 49GB internal storage reinforces its spontaneous-creator role: the drone can capture without first checking whether you remembered a card. Files can be transferred to the phone for quick editing and sharing. Lito 1 has no internal storage, so a compatible microSD card belongs on the essential packing list.

The opposite tradeoff appears in control. Lito 1's current C$419 standard package includes RC-N3, making manual dual-stick flight the default. Neo 2 can fly without a remote, but O4 remote control requires the Neo 2 Digital Transceiver plus a compatible controller; immersive motion control also requires the correct goggles and controller combination.

Need a controller-ready Neo 2 kit?

The current DJI Neo 2 Fly More Combo is C$549 and includes RC-N3, the Digital Transceiver, three batteries, a charging hub and propeller guards. It costs more than Lito 1 but also contains a different quantity of batteries and accessories, so compare the workflow and box—not only the total.

Canadian buying context

Under 250 g helps, but operating weight decides the category

Transport Canada treats drones under 250 g as microdrones. They do not require registration or a drone pilot certificate, but operators still have to fly safely, avoid reckless or negligent operation, respect privacy and trespass rules, and comply with airspace restrictions. The remote controller is not counted; equipment attached to or carried by the aircraft is.

Neo 2's approximately 151 g body leaves considerably more margin below 250 g. Lito 1's standard takeoff weight is approximately 249 g, so attachments or the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus can move its operating weight into the 250 g-and-up category. Weigh the configuration you will actually fly and check the current official rules before takeoff.

Rules reviewed September 13, 2026. See Transport Canada's flying safely and legally guidance and drone operation categories. This is practical buying context, not legal advice.

Scenario verdict

Which one should you buy?

Choose Lito 1 for:

Landscape and city establishing shots, aerial still photography, learning conventional drone controls, longer planned flights, RAW photo work, controlled gimbal moves and a standard kit that already includes RC-N3.

Choose Neo 2 for:

Solo travel, running, cycling, hiking, family clips, palm launch, faster follow-me capture, spontaneous social video, internal storage and the smallest workflow between “I want this shot” and recording it.

Our default recommendation: Lito 1 is the better first drone if you are excited to learn aerial cinematography. Neo 2 is the better first drone if you are excited to film yourself doing something else. If both descriptions sound right, decide which footage you would regret missing more: the planned aerial reveal or the moment when no one is available to hold the camera.
