DJI SDR Transmission 2 + RS 5 / RS 4 Pro Setup Guide: Cables, Power, Camera Control & Remote Gimbal Control

Ronin rig integration · checked 19 September 2026

Same transmitter. Different gimbal cable.

RS 5 uses the supplied USB-C firmware-update cable. RS 4 Pro needs a separately sold USB-C-to-CAN cable. Both can power the SDR Transmission 2 TX, but the camera video and camera-control paths still need their own connections.

Quick answer

Plug the TX’s USB/DP port into the RS 5 Multifunctional Port with the supplied USB-C to USB-C Firmware Update Cable. For RS 4 Pro, use DJI’s separately sold SDR Transmission 2 USB-C-to-CAN Gimbal Control Cable between TX USB/DP and the gimbal’s Video Transmission/LiDAR Range Finder port. Neither cable replaces the camera-to-TX video lead or the camera-to-gimbal control lead.

One-glance decision

RS 5 versus RS 4 Pro: cable, port and power

On a phone, swipe within the table to see both gimbals.

Connection DJI RS 5 DJI RS 4 Pro
Gimbal → TX cable USB-C to USB-C Firmware Update Cable supplied with SDR Transmission 2 DJI SDR Transmission 2 Gimbal Control Cable, USB-C to CAN; sold separately
Without Expansion Plate TX USB/DP → RS 5 Multifunctional Port TX USB/DP → RS 4 Pro Video Transmission/LiDAR Range Finder Port; match the cable’s labelled ends
With Expansion Plate Plate side USB-C Plate bottom USB-C, not the side port
TX power and gimbal communication Supplied by RS 5 through the correct connection Supplied by RS 4 Pro through the correct USB-C-to-CAN connection
Camera parameters Not automatic. Use a supported camera and the correct camera-control path; verify the functions needed for that body.

DJI documents both gimbals as compatible. The practical difference is not whether they can work; it is the specific cable and destination port. A common USB-C lead is not a substitute for the RS 4 Pro’s specified USB-C-to-CAN control cable. If you are deciding which stabilizer to own in the first place, read the separate RS 5 versus RS 4 Pro workflow comparison.

Build the topology first

Three connections—not one magic USB-C cable

A camera on a Ronin can send a wireless picture while the gimbal is unresponsive, or the gimbal can move remotely while the app cannot change camera settings. These symptoms make sense once each path has a job.

Path 01
Video
Camera HDMI/DP output → SDR Transmission 2 TX → wireless link → RX/displayThis is the picture. Match the camera’s output, video cable and receiver/display format.
Path 02
Camera
Compatible camera → suitable Multi-Camera Control Cable → RS gimbalFor the RS-integrated route, this enables only the camera functions supported by the exact body and connection. It is not the TX-to-gimbal cable.
Path 03
Gimbal
RS 5 or RS 4 Pro → model-specific cable → SDR Transmission 2 TXThis carries gimbal communication and can power the TX from the RS battery. The RX still needs its own power.

The from-box SDR Transmission 2 TX/RX setup guide covers activation, role selection, pairing and general no-signal checks. Here, start only after you know which unit is TX and which is RX. Route and secure all cables so full pan/tilt/roll motion does not pull a connector or interfere with balancing.

There is a separate direct camera-to-TX PTP workflow. DJI’s camera compatibility material also describes camera parameter control through a camera-control connection to the transmitter. That path is not the same as the RS-integrated camera → gimbal Multi-Camera Control Cable. Choose and test the topology you intend to use; do not assume the cables or feature lists are interchangeable.

Model-specific steps

Connect the transmitter to the right Ronin port

RS 5: use the cable already in the SDR 2 box

  1. Mount and balance the camera. Give the transmitter and both camera-side leads safe clearance before motor movement.
  2. Connect video from the camera’s supported HDMI/DP output to the SDR Transmission 2 unit set as TX.
  3. Connect TX USB/DP to the RS 5 Multifunctional Port with DJI’s supplied USB-C to USB-C Firmware Update Cable. Mount TX securely on the stabilizer.
  4. Power the RS 5, then confirm TX power and gimbal communication. At the receiving end, power RX separately and connect the Ronin app if remote gimbal functions are needed.

You do not need the RS 4 Pro’s USB-C-to-CAN cable for this RS 5 path. The RS 5-to-TX lead also does not replace the camera-to-RS Multi-Camera Control Cable when your supported camera needs that for control.

RS 4 Pro: buy the specified USB-C-to-CAN cable

  1. Start with the same camera-to-TX video path and safe cable clearance.
  2. Obtain the separately sold DJI SDR Transmission 2 Gimbal Control Cable (USB-C to CAN). It is not the Combo’s ordinary firmware-update cable.
  3. Put the labelled USB-C end into TX USB/DP and the CAN end into the RS 4 Pro Video Transmission/LiDAR Range Finder port, following DJI’s connector markings.
  4. Power the RS 4 Pro and check TX start-up and gimbal communication. Power RX independently at the other end.

DJI specifically lists the wrong cable or port among power/start-up causes. If the TX works on NP-F but not from RS 4 Pro, recheck this dedicated cable before troubleshooting the wireless channel.

Before ordering: SpeedyDrone’s verified SDR Transmission 2 Combo listing includes two firmware-update USB-C cables, but no RS 4 Pro USB-C-to-CAN cable. An exact SpeedyDrone listing for that separately sold cable was not verified on 19 September 2026; confirm the accessory with the store rather than assuming a generic substitute.

Power without confusion

Does the TX need its own NP-F battery?

Not when the compatible gimbal connection is working. DJI says the RS battery can power the SDR Transmission 2 TX through the correct RS 5 or RS 4 Pro connection. That can remove an NP-F battery and adapter from the moving camera rig. It does not power the RX, monitor, phone or camera.

When TX is on a tripod, shoulder rig or other standalone position, use an NP-F battery or suitable external USB-C power. DJI’s startup guide specifies a 65W-or-higher USB-C PD adapter when using that external route. Confirm the battery/adapter, cable and connector on your own rig before treating a power fault as a radio fault.

Two different remote jobs

Moving the gimbal is not controlling the camera

With the gimbal-to-TX path working and the RX connected through the DJI Ronin app, DJI lists Force Mobile (phone motion mapped to the gimbal), a virtual joystick and gimbal recentering. These are remote gimbal actions. Force Mobile is an operator control mode, not a promise of automatic subject tracking.

Remote gimbal control

Changes where the camera points. Check TX ↔ RS communication, RX/app connection and the desired Ronin control mode. A working HDMI picture alone does not prove this path.

Remote camera control

May adjust supported aperture, shutter and ISO or trigger photo/recording, depending on the exact camera, cable, settings and DJI support. For the RS-integrated route, use the appropriate camera-to-gimbal Multi-Camera Control Cable. A moving gimbal alone does not prove these camera functions.

DJI’s direct camera-to-TX PTP/CEC compatibility is another layer. Check the model-specific SDR Transmission 2 camera compatibility guide and DJI’s current camera compatibility matrix before promising a particular control. If the camera has no supported control result for your chosen route, another USB-C cable cannot create it.

Expansion Plate

The RS 5 port is on the side. The RS 4 Pro port is underneath.

Adding the SDR Transmission 2 Expansion Plate changes where the gimbal-control cable lands on the transmitter assembly. DJI’s RS 5 path uses the plate’s side USB-C port. The RS 4 Pro’s USB-C-to-CAN cable uses a bottom USB-C port; DJI explicitly warns against the side port for that connection. Keep the plate’s camera video inputs separate from these gimbal-control ports.

Wrong-port shortcut: RS 5 → side USB-C. RS 4 Pro → bottom USB-C. The RS 4 Pro cable remains the dedicated USB-C-to-CAN type even when the plate is installed.

The plate can add camera-side HDMI/SDI connection options; it does not mean multiple camera inputs are carried simultaneously or that every SDI signal is 4K. Select and verify one supported video input. If you only need HDMI and the standard gimbal connection, the plate is optional—not part of the essential RS 5 versus RS 4 Pro cable answer.

Two useful limits

Check vertical mounting and Focus Pro separately

DJI does not support the stabilizer’s native vertical-shooting configuration when the SDR Transmission 2 transceiver is mounted through the Quick-Release Plate. That is a mounting-specific restriction, not a blanket statement that a vertical video signal can never be transmitted. Build and balance the exact physical configuration before promising native vertical operation.

DJI also says SDR Transmission 2 does not connect to DJI Focus Pro. RS 4 Pro can have its own Focus Pro/LiDAR ecosystem, but that does not turn the SDR 2 wireless link into a direct Focus Pro connection. Treat focus control as a separate verified workflow.

Fault isolation

Troubleshoot the symptom, then the matching path

RS 4 Pro will not power TX

Confirm the separately sold SDR 2 USB-C-to-CAN cable, labelled TX USB/DP end and RS 4 Pro Video Transmission/LiDAR port. Reseat both ends; do not use the included RS 5 firmware cable as a substitute.

RS 5 will not power TX

Check the included USB-C firmware-update cable from TX USB/DP to the RS 5 Multifunctional Port, plus gimbal battery state and full connector seating.

Picture works, gimbal does not move remotely

Video is Path 01, so test Path 03: gimbal cable/port, TX communication and RX-to-Ronin-app control connection. A monitor connected only for HDMI viewing is not proof that the app-control path is active.

Gimbal moves, camera parameters do not

Test Path 02 independently. Check exact camera compatibility and settings, camera-to-RS Multi-Camera Control Cable and the individual function. Do not diagnose this as a radio-range issue from a good video feed.

RS 4 Pro fails with Expansion Plate

Move the specified USB-C-to-CAN gimbal lead to the plate’s bottom USB-C connection, not its RS 5 side port. Then retest TX power and communication.

Standalone USB-C TX power is unstable

Check a proper USB-C PD source; DJI’s startup advice specifies 65W or higher. If NP-F works but USB-C does not, isolate the PD adapter and power cable before changing the camera video path.

When the complaint is no picture rather than power or remote control, return to the general SDR Transmission 2 setup/no-signal guide for TX/RX roles, camera output and receiver display checks.

Before the shoot

Buy and test the cable plan—not just the transmitter

  1. Choose the exact gimbal: RS 5 uses the included firmware USB-C cable; RS 4 Pro needs the separately sold SDR 2 USB-C-to-CAN cable.
  2. List all three paths: camera video to TX; supported camera control to RS if needed; RS to TX for gimbal power/communication. Add RX, its power and display/app connection.
  3. Check the camera, not only the gimbal: model, firmware, camera-control cable, menu settings and the specific remote functions required. Do a real app test.
  4. Test physical clearance: full gimbal motion, cable slack, transmitter mount, balancing and any native-vertical configuration.
  5. Recheck availability: public product pages showed backorder wording on 19 September 2026. Ask SpeedyDrone for the current ETA and exact cable sourcing before a time-critical shoot.

This is an integration guide, not a claim that every camera/lens combination is supported. Keep the confirmed cable model and working settings in the crew’s kit list.

Frequently asked questions

SDR Transmission 2 with RS 5 / RS 4 Pro FAQ

What cable connects DJI SDR Transmission 2 to RS 5?

Use the SDR Transmission 2 USB-C to USB-C Firmware Update Cable supplied with the unit. DJI specifies TX USB/DP to the RS 5 Multifunctional Port. With the Expansion Plate, the RS 5 connection moves to the plate’s side USB-C port. This is the gimbal power/communication cable, not the camera-to-TX video lead.

Does RS 5 power the SDR Transmission 2 transmitter?

Yes. DJI says the correctly connected RS 5 battery can power the TX and support gimbal communication. The RX, display and camera still need their own power. If TX does not start, check the specified cable and ports before adding an NP-F battery to the moving rig.

What cable does RS 4 Pro need for SDR Transmission 2?

DJI specifies the separately sold SDR Transmission 2 Gimbal Control Cable (USB-C to CAN). Connect its USB-C/TX end to TX USB/DP and its CAN end to the RS 4 Pro Video Transmission/LiDAR Range Finder port. The Combo’s supplied USB-C firmware-update cable is not the RS 4 Pro substitute.

Can RS 4 Pro power the SDR Transmission 2 transmitter?

Yes, through the specified USB-C-to-CAN connection. DJI documents both power and gimbal communication from RS 4 Pro to TX. This does not power the receiver; a standalone TX can instead use NP-F or suitable USB-C PD power.

Can I control RS 5 or RS 4 Pro remotely through SDR 2?

DJI lists Ronin-app Force Mobile, virtual joystick and recenter when the TX is properly connected to a supported RS gimbal and the receiving side is connected to the app. Those move or recenter the gimbal; they are not automatic camera exposure control or ActiveTrack by themselves.

Why do I have video but no remote camera control?

Camera video, gimbal communication and camera-control connections are separate. In the RS-integrated workflow, check the exact camera’s support, the camera-to-gimbal Multi-Camera Control Cable, camera settings and the function being requested. DJI also documents a separate direct camera-to-TX PTP route; do not mix its cable instructions into the RS path.

Which Expansion Plate port is used with RS 4 Pro?

Use a bottom USB-C port for the RS 4 Pro’s specified USB-C-to-CAN gimbal cable. DJI says the Expansion Plate side USB-C port is for the RS 5 connection. The plate does not eliminate the RS 4 Pro’s dedicated cable requirement.

Can I shoot native vertical video with the transceiver attached?

DJI does not support the stabilizer’s native vertical configuration when the SDR Transmission 2 transceiver is mounted through the Quick-Release Plate. That precise mounting condition matters; it is not a universal statement about transmitting a vertical video signal. Test the proposed mechanical setup and clearance before a shoot.

Does SDR Transmission 2 connect to DJI Focus Pro?

No direct SDR Transmission 2-to-Focus Pro connection is supported in DJI’s product guidance. RS 4 Pro may use Focus Pro in its own ecosystem, but that is a separate compatibility and control path from the SDR 2 transmitter/receiver link.
