Native sensor resolution remains 1280 × 1024. UHR is processed 2560 × 2048 output. Imaging performance depends on the light, distance and settings; expand below for measurement ranges and test conditions.

Combine heat patterns with wide, medium telephoto and telephoto views. Move from an overview of the site to the equipment, structure or point of interest that needs attention.
Four times the pixel count of a 640 × 512 thermal sensor. UHR processing supports a higher-resolution thermal viewing mode.
Wide, medium telephoto and telephoto cameras give teams different fields of view for scene assessment and inspection detail.
A large wide-angle sensor, bright aperture and AI low-light enhancement help retain colour information after dark.
Imaging modes and usable detail depend on light, distance, environment and camera settings. Thermal observations should be interpreted within the measurement conditions.
RADIOMETRIC THERMAL IMAGING
The uncooled VOx thermal camera uses a native 1280 × 1024 detector with an 8 μm pixel pitch. UHR Infrared Image provides a processed 2560 × 2048 view at 30 fps. That higher output resolution is a viewing mode; the detector remains native 1K.
Record R-JPEG thermal photographs for radiometric analysis, alongside standard 8-bit JPEG output. DLT-664 is also listed in DJI’s thermal photo formats. DTAT 3.0 supports post-flight temperature marking and analysis, so an apparent hot spot can be reviewed beyond the live feed.
NETD describes the ability to distinguish small temperature differences. It is different from absolute temperature accuracy. The camera’s 8–14 μm spectral band, 45° diagonal field of view and f/0.85 lens support thermal observation, with a specified focus range from 10 m to infinity.
| Measurement mode | Temperature range | DJI accuracy specification |
|---|---|---|
| High Gain | −20°C to 150°C | ±2°C or ±2% of reading, whichever is greater |
| Low Gain | 0°C to 550°C | ±5°C or ±3% of reading, whichever is greater |
NETD ≤50 mK is specified at f/1.0 and 25°C ambient temperature. Measurement accuracy is subject to DJI’s test conditions. Surface emissivity, reflected energy, viewing angle, distance and weather affect interpretation; choose the gain range and inspection procedure for the asset.
Blend thermal and visible imagery on the controller and adjust the fusion ratio with a dial. Temperature checks and alerts can remain within the visible view. Preset split-screen layouts show up to three feeds drawn from wide, telephoto, thermal, map and Vision Assist; arbitrary custom combinations are not supported.
The laser range finder supports point marking, line drawing and area calculations. Its 3 km maximum is specified at 25°C, visibility above 8 km and target reflectivity above 25%, with perpendicular incidence. The NIR auxiliary light complements telephoto monochrome night vision; DJI specifies up to 100 m effective illumination under its test conditions.
The 1/0.98-inch wide camera combines a bright f/1.8 aperture with AI low-light enhancement and a maximum ISO of 1,600,000. DJI reports full-colour imagery down to 0.01 lux under its test conditions. Exposure, subject movement and ambient light still determine usable detail.
The 23.5 mm wide, 70 mm medium telephoto and 252 mm telephoto lenses provide distinct fields of view rather than relying solely on digital cropping. DJI describes 3× and 11× optical perspectives and up to 176× hybrid zoom. Hybrid zoom does not imply the same resolved detail as native optical capture.

Six-direction fisheye vision and Vision Assist help the pilot assess the surroundings. Suitable lighting and textured surfaces remain important.

03 / 03
Visual and radar information support environmental mapping when satellite signals are weak. Plan clearance and a safe return path for the actual site.
Operating and protection limits apply. Sensing assists the pilot and depends on the target and environment. IP55 resistance can decrease with wear; radar availability varies by region.
LiDAR, mmWave radar and omnidirectional vision contribute complementary information about the aircraft’s surroundings.

Different sensing methods support situational awareness as light, visibility and the site change. Detection depends on obstacle size, material and flight conditions.
Dust and water resistance supports work in challenging environments. Follow the flight manual’s operating and maintenance limits.
Sensing assists the pilot. Maintain clearance and a suitable flight plan; mmWave functions may be restricted by regional regulations.
IP55 resistance is not permanent and may decrease with wear. Performance varies by environment and obstacle characteristics.
Four upward and two downward fisheye cameras provide omnidirectional visual sensing. Low-light visual positioning is specified down to 0.5 lux with suitable textured surfaces. Vision Assist adds surrounding views to the pilot’s display; below 12 lux, the vision sensors switch to black and white.
The horizontal rotating LiDAR adds another source of information when thin structures are difficult to distinguish visually. DJI’s up-to-32 m wire detection claim uses a 21.6 mm steel-core aluminium stranded wire within the LiDAR field of view, in specified clear, well-lit conditions without direct sunlight.
Forward, upward and downward mmWave radar complement vision and LiDAR, while a downward time-of-flight sensor contributes close-range sensing. Radar functionality and available operating bands depend on regional regulations. Confirm the Canadian configuration for the intended mission.
In locations such as bridge structures, canyons and urban corridors, the aircraft can combine visual and radar information to build an environmental map. This supports positioning when satellite signals are weak. It does not remove the need to assess clearance, return paths and a safe landing location before approaching the structure.
The aircraft is rated IP55, with an operating temperature specification of −20°C to 50°C without solar radiation. Wind resistance during takeoff and landing is specified at 12 m/s. These are separate limits: an acceptable temperature or wind reading alone does not establish that a flight in precipitation or icing conditions is suitable.
Small or poorly reflective targets, surface material, obstacle orientation, rain, fog, snow and changing illumination can affect detection. Vision requires texture and sufficient light, and can perform poorly over reflective or moving water. The aircraft cannot actively avoid every fast-moving object. Keep control authority and clearance; use DJI’s manual to evaluate the actual route.
IP55 resistance is not permanent and can decline with wear. The wire figure is a conditional laboratory claim, not a guaranteed clearance distance or a recommendation to approach energized conductors. DJI sensing test notes.

OPEN EDGE AI
Built-in detection, automated patrol actions and an open algorithm pathway bring more of the inspection workflow onto the aircraft and controller.
Analyze visible and thermal feeds in parallel to help locate supported target classes, including vehicles and vessels. DJI also lists fire detection in the visible-light camera view. Detection is assistance for the operator: confirm the target and its context before treating it as a finding.
With Pilot 2 connected to FlightHub 2, supported cloud workflows accept text or image prompts to search for objects and raise alerts. This connected search is distinct from the aircraft’s built-in target models. Confirm the service, connectivity and regional requirements.
Open onboard computing supports third-party algorithm deployment through DJI’s developer pathway. Teams can investigate models tailored to their assets instead of assuming a generic detection category will identify every defect. Training, certification and integration remain project requirements.
Outline an area on the map to generate an AI Patrol Route. Establish the mission boundary, target classes and a safe capture plan before launch.
Supported actions include hovering, taking photographs, recording video and broadcasting audio. Audio requires a compatible speaker setup; an accessory is not included simply because the workflow supports it.
The patrol workflow compiles results into a post-flight report. Review detections and source imagery before handing findings to inspection, maintenance or incident-command teams.
Feature availability depends on firmware, software and region. Fire detection is available in the visible-light view only. DJI onboard AI and patrol details.
O4 ENTERPRISE ENHANCED
Adaptive radio links, cellular support and relay topologies provide different ways to plan communications.

01 / 04
One relay aircraft provides the communications path to one working aircraft, with separate controller roles.

02 / 04
A single controller operates the supported relay and working-aircraft arrangement. Smart Relay can adjust the relay position and attitude.

03 / 04
One relay serves two working aircraft with two controllers in DJI’s supported configuration.

04 / 04
Two relay aircraft pass communications sequentially to the working aircraft. Confirm the supported equipment and firmware before planning the setup.
These official diagrams illustrate communication configurations. Relay and cellular functions depend on setup and region; they do not grant BVLOS operating permission. Additional aircraft and controllers are separate equipment.
O4 ENTERPRISE ENHANCED
Adaptive radio links, cellular connectivity and multiple relay arrangements give teams different ways to plan communications around obstructions.

O4 Enterprise Enhanced works with the controller’s high-gain smart antenna array and adaptive band switching. DJI quotes up to 40 km under the IC standard in an unobstructed, interference-free test. This is a one-way communication-range measurement, not a return-flight range or authorization to fly beyond visual line of sight.
DJI describes dual built-in Cellular Dongle 2 modules that switch to the optimal available network link. Cellular support requires coverage and a compatible service configuration. Terrain, carrier coverage and interference remain part of the communications plan; mobile connectivity does not guarantee continuous command coverage.
A relay aircraft extends the communications path to a working aircraft, with separate controller roles. Plan the relay position alongside the working route, and account for the energy and landing requirements of both aircraft.
A single controller operates the relay and working aircraft. DJI’s Smart Relay can adjust relay attitude and hovering position to support the link. This is a supported relay arrangement; it should not be confused with two remote controllers jointly controlling a single aircraft.
DJI describes a three-aircraft arrangement in which one relay serves two operational aircraft with two controllers. This adds a coordination requirement: plan aircraft separation, roles, communications and contingency actions for the whole operation.
Two relay aircraft pass communications sequentially to the working aircraft. Confirm the supported aircraft, controller and firmware configuration before selecting this topology; additional aircraft and equipment are separate from a single M5T package.
Radio bands, cellular features and relay functions vary by country or region. The 40 km test figure does not change Transport Canada operating permissions, VLOS requirements or airspace authorization. DJI transmission test conditions and relay notes.

READY FOR THE NEXT SORTIE
Coordinate packs, charging power and field equipment. The RC Plus 3 Enterprise display and 515 W charging system support the broader deployment workflow.
Official reference configuration; confirm the supplied equipment in the NA SP Plus quotation.
DJI no-payload test maxima, measured to 0% battery in controlled conditions. Actual endurance varies; retain a return-and-landing reserve. Full flight, charging and battery conditions are below.

Maximum flight time without payloads
Long endurance can reduce interruptions during site work. Actual flight time changes with accessories, flight mode, weather and the mission profile. Build a return-and-landing reserve into every flight plan.
DJI test maximum: controlled wind tunnel, conditions equivalent to no wind at sea level, no payloads, forward flight at approximately 9 m/s until 0% battery. This is not a recommended operational battery endpoint.
Hover time and forward-flight endurance are different specifications. DJI’s 54-minute hover maximum uses the aircraft without payloads in controlled conditions equivalent to no wind at sea level, continuing to 0% battery. Account for the outbound flight, inspection dwell, wind and a return-and-landing reserve.
The Matrice 5 Series battery is a 10073 mAh, 21.36 V, 6S lithium-ion pack. Low-temperature self-heating supports battery preparation, but charging is specified at 5°C to 40°C. The aircraft does not support battery hot-swapping; plan a landing and shutdown between packs.
The maximum horizontal forward speed is measured under controlled wind-tunnel conditions equivalent to calm sea-level air. Route speed should reflect the sensing mode, obstacle environment, payload and capture requirements. Mapping overlap and thermal inspection detail may call for a much slower flight.

DJI pairs the platform with the RC Plus 3 Enterprise controller, featuring a 7.44-inch, 2000-nit display. The Matrice 5 Series charging system supports 515 W fast charging. Battery rotation, available AC power and time between sorties matter as much as the maximum single-flight figure.
DJI quotes 10–95% charging in approximately 31 minutes in Standby mode under its specified conditions. Confirm the hub, power source, battery count and any accessories included in the purchased package. A battery, charging hub or spotlight shown in official media is not an automatic promise of inclusion.
For Canadian winter work, build time for pack preparation, cold-weather checks and conservative energy margins into the job. Anti-ice propellers do not make every icing condition suitable for flight.
Manufacturer maxima are reference measurements, not operational guarantees. DJI aircraft and battery specifications. Charging performance depends on conditions and setup; see DJI’s charging-system notes.

Cruise, FlyTo, Smart Track and Point of Interest support different ways to operate and frame the task. Preset split-screen layouts keep up to three supported views on screen. Custom plugins can appear as floating windows inside Pilot 2, letting specialist tools sit alongside familiar flight controls.
Connected workflows support aircraft and gimbal control, remote takeoff and landing, FlyTo tasks and multiple live views. Route tools include Smart 3D Capture, geometric and slope planning. Multimodal cloud detection adds text- and image-prompt searches when the supported Pilot 2 and cloud setup is connected.
Process supported capture into 2D maps, 3D models and point clouds for GIS, construction and site assessment. DJI lists offline visible-light PPK, D-RTK 3 data imports, rolling-shutter reconstruction and video-frame reconstruction among the supported workflows. Define coordinate systems, checkpoints and deliverable acceptance criteria before capture.
Use DJI’s thermal analysis tool to mark temperatures, inspect abnormal points and review thermal photographs after the mission. Retain the radiometric source files and capture context for technical review; an exported colour image alone is not equivalent to the original thermal dataset.
Develop custom mobile applications or extend Pilot 2 through its plugin architecture. DJI provides development resources and sample modules to help integrate mission-specific interfaces without rebuilding every flight function.
Three aircraft E-Ports support official and compatible third-party payload integration. E-Port V3 includes encrypted authentication for payload verification and data transmission. Respect the 400 g maximum payload specification and the requirements of the complete installation.
DJI’s Intelligent Algorithm Developer pathway provides model-training tools and a certification process for access to onboard computing. Confirm model format, supported functions and deployment requirements before committing to a custom detection project.
DJI lists media data encryption, Local Data Mode, one-tap log clearing and AES-256 video transmission encryption. Decide which mission data stays local and which workflows need connectivity or cloud processing. Review account, software and organizational requirements for the intended deployment; these features alone do not establish Canadian data residency or a specific security certification.
Software licences, cloud services, connectivity, firmware, developer access and regional feature availability may be separate requirements. Verify the complete workflow and quotation before purchase.

2D THERMAL ORTHOMOSAICS
DJI Terra stitches supported thermal imagery using visible-light positioning as a reference. Review temperature patterns and mark anomalies within the larger asset layout.
SMART 3D CAPTURE
Use an initial model to plan detailed capture around a structure. Review route geometry, coverage and clearance before the mission.

RTK positioning accuracy is different from delivered map or model accuracy. Manufacturer GCP-free and rapid-modeling claims use defined capture conditions; expand below for the details.
MAPPING & RECONSTRUCTION
Combine repeatable capture, accurate positioning and the appropriate processing workflow for orthomosaics, thermal maps and three-dimensional site information.

DJI Terra can stitch thermal photographs using visible-light positioning as a reference. A thermal orthomosaic lets teams review temperature patterns across a larger area and mark anomalies in context, rather than comparing disconnected frames from individual panel rows or assets.
The controller can receive photographs during flight for local point-cloud or 2.5D reconstruction. Annotate and measure a supported 2.5D model to help interpret the site while the team is still there. A quick field model supports assessment; validate it against the required accuracy before using it as a final survey deliverable.
Build an initial model on the controller, then plan a route that follows the subject’s surface for more detailed capture. Review virtual routes and waypoint photographs to assess coverage and clearance. This is useful for complex structures where a simple overhead grid may miss important surfaces.
The specified RTK Fix accuracy is 1 cm + 1 ppm horizontally and 1.5 cm + 1 ppm vertically. These are aircraft positioning figures. They are not a blanket guarantee of orthomosaic, model or measured-feature accuracy. Control the coordinate reference, image geometry, ground sampling distance and independent checkpoints.
DJI reports centimetre-level surveying with Terra without ground control points under defined capture conditions: Ortho or Oblique Area Route, 120 m altitude and 12 MP images, excluding Terrain Follow. Confirm that the actual mission and processing setup meet the required standard; use checkpoints to verify the delivered result.
DJI’s reference is measured from the end of image capture to the output, with interference below −90 dBm and the aircraft within 500 m of the controller. Its on-site modeling capture note uses 100 m altitude, 15 m/s flight speed, 80% forward overlap and 70% side overlap. Processing time and model quality will vary with the dataset and conditions.
Mapping altitudes in manufacturer tests are technical test conditions, not operating permission for a Canadian mission. Software licences and supported configurations may be separate. DJI surveying and modeling notes · DJI Terra.

MISSION APPLICATIONS
Select a mission below to explore how the imaging, sensing and software tools fit together. The capture plan should follow the decision the ground team needs to make.

Use a wide view to establish the scene, thermal imaging to examine heat patterns and telephoto views to check a point of interest. Combine the live view with map markers and team coordination to help ground responders assess where to investigate.
AI detections can help prioritize a review, but a thermal signature or target box does not confirm identity or condition. Keep a trained operator in the decision loop and account for terrain, vegetation and environmental effects.
Move between the 70 mm and 252 mm perspectives for inspection detail, then compare thermal observations with the visible asset. Foreground stabilization uses AI segmentation to separate the subject from background interference during telephoto capture.
DJI’s dedicated Power Line Inspection function uses the top-mounted LiDAR to identify and follow supported conductors laterally. Its stated conditions include no wind and conductor inclination below 40°. Establish the utility’s clearance and work procedures before considering this workflow.

Plan repeatable routes, retain radiometric photographs and pair apparent thermal anomalies with visible imagery. A Terra thermal orthomosaic can organize findings across the site. Record the capture conditions and pass potential issues to the qualified inspection team; a bright region in a palette is not a diagnosis by itself.
Use the wide view for orientation, medium telephoto for component context and telephoto for selected detail. Weak-GNSS positioning support and surface-following capture tools may help with complex geometry, but the route still needs sufficient clearance, return options and a planned approach to occlusion and reflective surfaces.
Choose an orthomosaic, 3D model, point cloud or rapid 2.5D field assessment before designing the route. Match overlap, altitude, camera settings and positioning to that output. Verify the final result against independent checkpoints and project acceptance criteria instead of substituting the aircraft’s RTK specification for survey accuracy.
DJI describes Boat Launch and landing-pattern recognition for vessel operations. It recommends vessel speed below 10 knots, wind below 5 m/s and a 3 m × 3 m deck area for takeoff and landing. Use the standard landing-point pattern from DJI’s downloads and assess the actual deck, motion, lighting and recovery options. Vision can be affected by water surfaces.
These are workflow examples, not guarantees of inspection findings or operating approval. Compatible AL2 spotlight and AS2 speaker functions depend on the purchased setup; accessories remain outside this aircraft-only collection. DJI application conditions.
