Equipment specifications and operating guidance reviewed October 18, 2026.
A useful drone substation thermal inspection produces an identifiable asset record: a visible image, the original radiometric thermal file, measurement context and a named reviewer. DJI Matrice 5TD can support that collection. A colourful hotspot alone cannot establish the fault, its severity or the maintenance action.
Start with the maintenance team's required evidence, then design the flight around obtaining it. This guide focuses on what to capture, measure and report for individual substation assets. The broader Dock 4 power-line inspection guide covers the automated utility operating model.

Why Use Thermal Drones for Substations?
Thermal imaging adds a non-contact view of accessible equipment surfaces. Repeated observations can help a maintenance team notice a changed heat pattern and revisit its history. RGB images establish which component was observed; the thermal record describes its apparent surface-temperature distribution.
The useful outcome is a reviewable comparison, not simply more images. Define the asset, required view and acceptable evidence before flying. Follow the utility's access controls, electrical clearances and exclusion zones. Camera reach and obstacle sensing do not establish a safe operating distance or replace the operator's approved method.
Which Substation Assets Should Be Inspected?
Build the list from the station's equipment register and maintenance priorities. Suitable external views may include the following, subject to access, visibility and the utility's inspection procedure:
- Transformer connections and cooling equipment: identify terminals, bushings and accessible radiator or cooling-system surfaces separately.
- Busbars and connection points: record the bay, component and phase so a reviewer can compare the intended connection.
- Disconnects and switching equipment: identify accessible contacts and terminals, rather than treating the whole assembly as one temperature.
- Insulators and surge-arrester assemblies: establish the exact component and a meaningful comparison group.
A surface view does not inspect every internal part. Enclosures, occlusion and viewing geometry can leave gaps; mark those assets as not assessed rather than reporting them as normal. FLIR's substation monitoring discussion provides general application context, not a DJI-specific diagnostic rule.
Matrice 5TD Thermal Camera Capabilities
Specify the native sensor, selected gain and retained file format. DJI's exact Matrice 5TD infrared-camera specification lists the following. These are manufacturer figures, not results from a SpeedyDrone substation test.

| Parameter | DJI specification | Inspection implication |
|---|---|---|
| Native resolution | 1280 × 1024 | Target detail still depends on distance and optics. |
| High Gain range | -40°C to 150°C | Select an appropriate measurement range. |
| Low Gain range | 0°C to 550°C | Record the changed gain and accuracy specification. |
| Measurement | Spot / Area | Identify the actual spot or region used. |
| Photo formats | JPEG; 16-bit R-JPEG; DLT-664 | Agree the retained original and analysis requirements. |
| Nominal accuracy | High Gain: ±2°C or ±2%, whichever is greater | This is not the complete uncertainty of a field result. |
DJI also lists Low Gain accuracy of ±5°C or ±3%, whichever is greater, and a thermal focus range of 10 m to infinity. The focus specification is not electrical clearance. UHR output at 2560 × 2048 does not change the native detector resolution or guarantee more accurate measurements.
Planning a Repeatable Inspection Mission
Plan an asset-view schedule before a waypoint route. For each component, record its ID, phase, required face, observation position, framing and expected visibility. Include a permitted alternative view and a way to record incomplete coverage. Return and landing arrangements belong in the approved flight plan.
Define which conditions need to be comparable: operating load, weather, sun exposure, viewing angle, distance and camera settings. Record actual conditions at capture; a repeated route does not guarantee the same measurement conditions. Version the plan when equipment, obstructions or the inspection objective changes.
RGB and Thermal Image Collection
Make each thermal observation traceable to a visible component. Capture an RGB context view and a closer identifying view where necessary, alongside the relevant thermal original. Record filenames, timestamp and time zone, asset ID, camera/view and the region under discussion. Do not rely on file order to keep the pair together.
Different cameras and fields of view can show different details. Confirm that the marked thermal region corresponds to the intended RGB component; a fused display does not establish perfect alignment at every distance. Check sharpness, target coverage, occlusion and range before accepting the set.
Keep an index that links each pair to the asset register and mission. Check the camera and mission clocks, and retain the time zone used for the utility’s load record. When a filename is changed for delivery, retain a mapping to the original name. A reviewer should be able to retrieve the same component and capture without reconstructing the association from a folder of thumbnails.
Retain the original radiometric file separately from annotated JPEGs, screenshots and report exports. Validate a real M5TD sample through the selected analysis software and version before accepting the workflow. A filename extension or a published download link alone does not prove compatibility or preserved temperature data.
How to Interpret Thermal Anomalies
A relatively hot connection is an observation to investigate. It does not, by itself, prove a loose joint, excessive contact resistance or imminent failure. Review the original data and the comparison basis before giving the finding an equipment-health meaning.
- Electrical load
- Obtain the operating state from the utility. Compare equivalent components under meaningfully comparable loading; state when load information is unavailable.
- Emissivity and reflected temperature
- Surface finish and reflected surroundings affect the reading. A reflective metal surface may show radiation from elsewhere.
- Angle, distance and target coverage
- Confirm the intended surface occupies enough resolved image detail. A small region can include surrounding material.
- Ambient conditions and repeatability
- Record air temperature, wind, sun exposure and relevant weather. Changing palette or automatic scale can change appearance without establishing a physical temperature change.
FLIR's measurement reference explains these parameter dependencies; its thermal-image guidance also discusses target resolution, reflections and scale. For the deeper measurement method, use SpeedyDrone's thermal accuracy guide. Apply the customer's qualified review procedure, not a universal temperature-difference threshold invented for this article.
State what the reported number describes. If the analysis reports a maximum or an average, identify the region and statistic; they are different descriptions of the selected pixels. Preserve the marked region and analysis settings so another reviewer can repeat the extraction. If the target is unresolved, obscured or outside the selected measurement range, record the limitation and obtain better evidence rather than treating a display adjustment as a correction.
From Images to Maintenance Reports
Separate an observed anomaly from a verified diagnosis and an accepted work order. Mark its location on an export while preserving the originals. A qualified reviewer should confirm identity, measurement suitability and comparison conditions, then record the disposition and its basis. Incomplete evidence needs a retake or an explicitly limited conclusion.

FlightHub 2 can support the mission/media workflow, but verify the exact export, retained files and handoff in your deployment. A notification is not proof that the maintenance team accepted a task. See the FlightHub 2 workflow guide for integration boundaries; do not assume automatic synchronization with every maintenance system.
A record the next person can understand
A Sample Substation Inspection Checklist
Use one traceable record per observation. The sample below is a report template: its asset ID and filenames are fictional examples, not actual inspection findings or DJI's default naming convention. No temperature result has been invented.
- Asset ID
- Substation-A / Equipment-07. Add bay, phase and component.
- Inspection date
- Record capture date, time and time zone.
- Inspection equipment
- DJI Matrice 5TD. Record aircraft, firmware and analysis-software version.
- Image references
- STA_E07_RGB_001.JPG; STA_E07_IR_001.JPG (R-JPEG). Retain actual originals.
- Conditions
- Record load and its source, ambient temperature, weather, distance and viewing geometry.
- Observation
- Describe any relative warm area and the component/comparison used; distinguish observation from cause.
- Measurement
- Enter actual values and units, gain, spot/area location, emissivity and reflected-temperature settings; note unsupported assumptions.
- Review status
- Pending Technical Review. Name the reviewer and retain later disposition.
- Assigned owner
- Identify the responsible maintenance team and acknowledgement.
- Follow-up
- Use the customer's approved criteria for further inspection, action and reinspection.
Before closing the record, check the following:
- Required assets and views are covered, or omissions are explicit.
- RGB and radiometric originals open and identify the same component.
- Measurement settings and load/environment context are retained.
- A reviewer, limitation and next owner are recorded.
- The maintenance reference and reinspection evidence can be found again.
Keep the report export, file index and originals linked. An annotated picture alone should not be the only surviving evidence.
Test the handoff with the people who will use it: can a reviewer open the radiometric original, reproduce the marked measurement, find the matching RGB component and identify the operating conditions? Can the maintenance owner acknowledge the record and link later work or reinspection to it? These are useful acceptance questions for a pilot; a large image count is not an alternative acceptance criterion.
What M5TD Cannot Diagnose Automatically
M5TD does not turn a heat pattern into a complete electrical diagnosis. An alert or detected object does not independently establish the cause, internal condition, failure probability or safe maintenance action. Thermal imaging observes accessible surfaces; it does not see through metal enclosures.
The utility's qualified personnel decide what further testing, isolation or work is appropriate. Keep that responsibility explicit in the report and procurement criteria. A successful automated flight, higher-resolution export or repeated hotspot alert cannot substitute for the accepted technical review.
Choosing a Dock 4 Deployment
A fixed system is most useful when recurring accepted observations justify its site and operating requirements. Evaluate capture frequency, reachable assets, communications, power, weather, data security and review capacity. Confirm the M5TD/Dock 4/O4 configuration, software access and required files through an acceptance mission.

SpeedyDrone lists Dock 4 and the Dock 4 / Matrice 5TD range through current enquiry paths. Discuss the complete equipment configuration, required deliverables, availability and delivery with the team before procurement.
In Canada, Transport Canada requirements depend on the operation. A dock does not grant flight or BVLOS authority. Proceed with utility permission, the applicable operating authority and a plan for unavailable or incomplete inspections.
