Manufacturer specifications are not a controlled head-to-head image or battery test. Resolution, stabilization mode, field of view, temperature and processing choices change the result.
Image and framing
8K is not the whole image-quality story
Action 6 records up to 8K30, while HERO13 Black records up to 5.3K60. That makes DJI stronger when maximum spatial resolution is the priority and GoPro stronger when 60fps at more than 4K is the requirement. Neither number tells you how the camera will look on a snowy trail at dusk.
What Action 6 changes
DJI combines a 1/1.1-inch square sensor with an f/2.0–f/4.0 variable aperture. The square 4K Custom mode can record 3840 × 3840 up to 60fps, giving editors room to create horizontal and vertical deliverables from one master frame. DJI also lists up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range under its test conditions.
That is a useful workflow advantage for a creator producing YouTube, Instagram and TikTok cuts from the same outing. It does not mean every 8K file is automatically better than a well-exposed 5.3K file.
What HERO13 Black still does well
GoPro's 5.3K 8:7 capture is also designed for flexible reframing, and 5.3K60 gives sports creators more temporal resolution than Action 6's 8K30 mode. HERO13 also offers 10-bit HLG HDR and GP-Log workflows for creators who already know how to grade them.
Its Burst Slo-Mo modes are genuinely differentiated: up to 720p400 or 900p360 for 15 seconds of real time, or 5.3K120 for five seconds. Those are short capture windows, not everyday continuous-recording modes.

Action 6 has the clearer low-light hardware case
A larger officially stated sensor and an f/2.0 maximum aperture give Action 6 a credible on-paper advantage when light is scarce. Canadian creators filming winter commutes, indoor action or late-day rides may value that more than another daytime specification.
Why “on paper” matters
Low-light results also depend on shutter speed, noise reduction, stabilization, motion, colour profile and the final delivery size. We would not declare an absolute winner without mounting both cameras together and reviewing the same scene at matched settings.
Stabilization is already mature on both
DJI offers RockSteady 3.0/3.0+ and HorizonSteady; GoPro offers HyperSmooth 6.0. Both systems are proven approaches. The meaningful test is whether your chosen resolution, field of view and horizon mode remain available for the activity you shoot.

Add Media Mod, Light Mod, Volta and a large third-party mount market, and GoPro remains a deep system rather than a camera sold on its own.

GoPro HERO13 Black
GoPro publishes more than 2.5 hours at 1080p30 and more than 1.5 hours at 4K30 or 5.3K30. HERO13 uses its own 1900mAh Enduro battery, which GoPro says is not compatible with older GoPro cameras.
Action 6's 240 minutes and HERO13's “more than 2.5 hours” should not be treated as the result of one controlled race. Recording modes and test conditions differ.
