T50 can broadcast some compatible dry seed through its spreading system, but it should not be treated as a universal seed drill. Seed fit, calibration, spread pattern, field timing and agronomic establishment still decide whether the workflow makes sense.

Yes — DJI Agras T50 can broadcast some compatible cover-crop seed through its spreading system. DJI specifies a 75 L spread tank, a 50 kg internal-load rating and compatibility with dry granules measuring 0.5–5 mm. Actual fit still depends on particle size, bulk density, moisture, flow behaviour, fragility and target rate. Every material needs its own calibrated setup and field-pattern check.

Aerial broadcasting is mainly an access-and-timing tool.

It can put seed on the field when a ground machine would damage the crop, cannot travel because the field is wet, or would miss a narrow establishment window.

Agronomy comes first: aircraft access does not guarantee establishment. Seed-to-soil contact, canopy interception, surface moisture, rainfall after application, residue and species-specific timing still control the result. Confirm the mix and timing with a qualified local agronomist.

The hardware is designed for dry granular spreading.

DJI specifically discusses seeding as a low-application-rate scenario. That supports seed workflows — but only after confirming the actual material can meter, leave the disk and land without unacceptable damage or pattern variation.

DJI's guide requires flow calibration when a new material template is created. It also recommends the small-flow hopper gate when material diameter is 2 mm or less, or when the standard gate opening would be 30% or less. Gate configuration and exact Canadian package contents should be verified before ordering.

Do not qualify seed by crop name alone.

Two lots of the same species can behave differently after changes in cleaning, coating, moisture or seed size. Evaluate the physical material and target rate as one system.

Particle or seed size

Confirm the lot stays within the 0.5–5 mm dry-material range and does not contain bridges, oversized pieces or fines.

Bulk density

Volume does not equal mass. Weigh the actual material and respect the lower load recommended by the DJI Agras app.

Flow behaviour

Look for bridging, pulsing, segregation and inconsistent discharge at the intended gate opening.

Moisture and surface

Damp, dusty, sticky or highly coated material may meter differently and can leave residue in the spreader.

Fragility

Compare a sample before and after spreading. Cracked seed or damaged coatings can make a mechanically possible job agronomically unacceptable.

Target application rate

The required kilograms per hectare must be achievable with stable flow, practical speed and verified across-swath uniformity.

No universal approved-seed list: DJI's diameter range is a hardware compatibility boundary, not a germination guarantee or a recommendation for a particular species, blend, coating or rate.

Calibration matters more than maximum tank capacity.

A full tank tells you how much can be carried. Calibration tells you whether the target kilograms per hectare are actually delivered evenly enough to justify the flight.

What should the test prove?

The measured total should support the target mass per hectare, and the across-swath pattern should be repeatable enough for the agronomic objective. Check the centre, shoulders and overlap zones rather than measuring only one container beneath the flight line. Run a short field verification after refilling because material condition and segregation can change during the job.

Drone seeding makes sense only when access or timing creates real value.

The strongest case is a field where seed can be broadcast successfully and the aircraft solves a genuine access or timing problem. The weakest case is one that depends on precise depth, packing or seed-to-soil contact the aircraft cannot provide.

Drone spreading may make sense when…

  • Wet ground or a standing crop blocks timely ground access.
  • The field contains small, irregular or difficult-to-reach areas.
  • The seed lot meters cleanly and survives the spreading mechanism.
  • A catch test produces an acceptable, repeatable pattern.
  • Weather and soil moisture support establishment after broadcasting.
  • The farm can manage batteries, loading, route control and records.

Another method may be better when…

  • The crop requires controlled seeding depth or firm packing.
  • Canopy or residue prevents adequate seed from reaching the soil.
  • The mix separates or bridges in the hopper.
  • Seed damage, wind movement or uneven distribution is unacceptable.
  • The rate demands constant refilling with little access advantage.
  • A drill or ground broadcaster can complete the work more reliably.
Canadian operating boundary: T50 ownership does not authorize every flight. Confirm current Transport Canada aircraft registration, pilot and operating-category requirements for the aircraft and mission. If the spread material is regulated, confirm product instructions and applicable federal, provincial or territorial requirements separately.

DJI Agras T50 cover-crop seeding questions

Can DJI Agras T50 seed cover crops?

It can broadcast some compatible dry cover-crop seed using the T50 Spreading System. The exact seed lot must fit DJI's 0.5–5 mm dry-material range and pass checks for density, flow, moisture, fragility, calibrated rate and spread pattern.

Can T50 spread any type of seed?

No. Seed names alone do not prove compatibility. Size, coating, moisture, density, shape, fragility and required application rate can all change whether a material meters and spreads acceptably.

How much seed can the T50 spreading system carry?

DJI specifies a 75 L tank and a 50 kg internal-load rating. The DJI Agras app may recommend a lower allowable load based on the aircraft's status and surroundings, and that lower recommendation must not be exceeded.

Does T50 need a special gate for small seeds?

DJI recommends the small-flow hopper gate when material diameter is 2 mm or less, or when the standard hopper-gate opening would be 30% or less. Confirm gate availability and package contents before deployment.

Why is a catch test important?

A catch test measures how much material lands across the swath. It helps the operator verify total rate, pattern shape and overlap before applying the full field, then adjust gate opening, disk speed, flight speed, height or line spacing.

Is aerial broadcasting as reliable as drilling?

Not automatically. Broadcasting may improve timing and access, but it does not create seeding depth or packing. Seed-to-soil contact, moisture, rainfall, canopy interception and residue can make drilled establishment more reliable in some fields.

Which Agras model is best for cover-crop spreading?

T25P suits lighter and smaller-block work, T50 offers a balanced commercial spreading workflow, and T100 provides much greater capacity with larger logistics and operating requirements. The right choice depends on field geometry, rate, refill rhythm, annual acres and Canadian compliance.
