DJI Matrice 4T vs Autel EVO Max 4T-XE: Which Thermal Drone Fits Your Canadian Team?

Choose DJI Matrice 4T as a starting point when your inspection team values a compact aircraft, three visible focal lengths and an existing DJI Pilot 2 or FlightHub 2 workflow. Evaluate Autel EVO Max 4T-XE when continuous optical zoom or a compatible multi-aircraft network changes how you collect evidence. Neither choice is settled by thermal resolution or maximum zoom alone.

The useful question is whether the configured system can show your smallest relevant target, preserve usable thermal data and fit the team's operating and purchasing requirements. A camera that produces an impressive live view may still fail the inspection handoff. A network feature may be unnecessary for a single-aircraft job, or require more equipment and people than the initial quotation includes.

This guide compares the two platforms as procurement starting points, not as a head-to-head flight test. It separates manufacturer specifications, current Canadian offers and the questions that need a delivered-unit acceptance check. For industrial inspections, the aircraft gathers evidence; the qualified asset reviewer determines what that evidence means.

Prices, product features and Canadian operating-category guidance checked October 13, 2026. Package contents, software and delivered hardware remain configuration-specific.

01 DJI Matrice 4T vs Autel EVO Max 4T-XE at a glance

Matrice 4T is a sensible first shortlist for a team retaining a DJI workflow. EVO Max 4T-XE deserves a closer evaluation when its imaging or network architecture solves a specific requirement. These are buyer-fit conclusions, not evidence that either platform is better for every inspection. Start with the required output, then decide which differences matter enough to justify the complete system.

The Matrice 4T's lower reference aircraft weight can matter when a team carries equipment between dispersed assets. The EVO Max's continuous zoom can matter when operators need to adjust framing around a small component without changing the aircraft's working position. Neither point establishes total kit weight, faster deployment or better usable imagery by itself.

A team already operating DJI equipment may place more value on retaining familiar planning, capture and review practices than on a larger maximum-zoom number. A team designing a networked operation may instead need to examine the Autel topology, compatible equipment and staffing. If the mission is ordinary single-aircraft observation, do not pay for a more elaborate network solely because it appears in the feature list.

02 Continuous optical zoom or three focal lengths?

Choose the camera workflow that produces usable detail at your permitted stand-off distance. The Matrice 4T offers separate wide, medium-tele and telephoto views. The 4T-XE offers continuous optical zoom. The distinction affects how operators establish context and frame a target, but does not tell you which final file will answer an engineer's question.

For an illustrative substation inspection, the overview might establish the equipment bay, an intermediate view might locate the component and a tighter view might document the surface condition. DJI's discrete focal lengths offer defined framing choices. Continuous optical zoom offers intermediate framing. The appropriate choice depends on target size, lighting, movement and the detail the reviewer must see, not just the operator's preferred live-view composition.

Why 112× versus 160× is the wrong contest

Hybrid zoom combines optical imaging with subsequent enlargement or processing. Comparing each brand's maximum setting does not hold the sensor, base field of view, exposure or saved output constant. A larger displayed target can be easier to locate without containing enough additional native information to distinguish a defect. Ask for the saved file, not only a screenshot of the controller at maximum zoom.

Three focal-length workflow
  1. Use the wide view to establish asset context.
  2. Select the medium-tele or telephoto view for the required framing.
  3. Review the saved target detail before relying on further enlargement.
Continuous optical-zoom workflow
  1. Establish the same asset and working distance.
  2. Adjust optical framing around the required target.
  3. Review the saved target detail separately from maximum hybrid zoom.
Designed for this guide. This compares capture choices, not measured image quality or a simulated camera view.

Define a visible-image acceptance task before requesting a demonstration. Specify the smallest component or feature, the distance allowed by site safety, the relevant orientation and the operating state. Have the intended reviewer examine the original outputs from equivalent conditions. Decide whether the task is locating an object, reading a marking or documenting a condition; these are different evidence requirements.

Laser distance information can help record where an observation was made, but a manufacturer's rangefinder maximum does not prove readable visual detail at that range. Keep target identity, position and working distance with the image. If neither platform can produce the required evidence from the permissible position, change the inspection method instead of treating additional digital enlargement as a solution.

Thermal evidence

03 The same 640 × 512 does not mean equal results

Thermal procurement should be based on target coverage and a usable measurement workflow, not detector resolution alone. Both platforms have a native 640 × 512 thermal specification, but a small component can occupy a different number of useful pixels depending on the lens, working distance and view. Reflections, focus and the target's surface behaviour also affect what the reviewer can defend.

DJI specifies a thermal diagonal field of view, while Autel's XE camera page labels its angle simply as FOV. Those labels should not be treated as an automatically matched basis for calculating a coverage advantage. Confirm the angle definition and delivered lens before drawing a quantitative footprint comparison. At procurement stage, equivalent target samples are more useful than a diagram built on incompatible assumptions.

Verify the actual XE configuration

Autel's published XE thermal page notes mixed 25/30fps batches and identifies an accurate-temperature-measurement distance of 5 m. These are conditions to clarify, not grounds for claiming that observation becomes impossible beyond that distance. Request the delivered camera's specifications and representative files at your intended working distance. A surface-temperature acceptance criterion needs a different review from a simple hot-object detection task.

Do not rank the visible cameras by an unresolved sensor size. Autel's earlier XE material and the current SpeedyDrone description use 1/1.2-inch, while the current official XE wide-camera page uses 1/2-inch. Confirm the exact Fusion 4T-XE specification supplied. A newer document does not, by itself, establish the hardware in a particular box.

Preserve the evidence the analyst needs

For Matrice 4T, DJI documents 16-bit R-JPEG thermal photos. Preserve the original measurement-capable file alongside a matched visible view, asset identity and relevant capture settings. For Autel, obtain an original sample from the supplied unit and test it in the organisation's actual analysis workflow. Do not assume that a familiar extension, a coloured export or a live temperature label guarantees compatible re-analysis.

Super Resolution is a processed output, not a larger native detector. A clearer display can support interpretation without eliminating undersampling, reflections or an unsuitable view. The thermal measurement accuracy reference explains those controls; the Matrice 4T thermal data workflow covers a traceable DJI handoff.

For an illustrative electrical asset, agree on the operating load, surface, minimum target coverage and review conditions before comparing images. For a solar or building task, define the applicable inspection method separately. An apparent thermal exception is not automatically proof of a leak, electrical fault or material defect. The qualified reviewer must decide what follow-up the evidence supports.

04 Flight time, battery turnaround and weather limits

Budget for the usable task window and the equipment needed between flights. Manufacturer maximum flight times describe their own test profiles. DJI's specification also distinguishes flight from hover time. Travel to the target, return, reserve policy, wind, accessories and battery condition all affect the useful capture period. Do not price staffing or daily inspection coverage by multiplying the headline endurance figure.

Carry the actual case, controller, batteries and charging equipment through a representative deployment. A lighter aircraft is not necessarily the lighter complete kit. A team moving between roadside assets may value compact handling; a team working from a vehicle may place more weight on charging, stored equipment and repeatable setup. Record those practical differences rather than assigning a universal portability score.

Hot swapping is a turnaround feature

Autel describes battery replacement without shutting down, subject to the applicable function and operating conditions. This concerns turnaround on the ground, not indefinite flight or replacing a battery in the air. Its manual includes temperature-related restrictions. Confirm the delivered battery, firmware and approved procedure, then evaluate whether keeping the system running actually improves your team's workflow.

Weather is a more important limitation than an attractive protection label. DJI states Matrice 4 Series is not waterproof. Autel's EVO Max manual states that IP43 is not universal and may require customisation, and does not recommend rain-day flying. Neither should be shortlisted as an unrestricted rain-operation system. Confirm the exact configuration and manual, then set operating and stop-work limits for the site.

Field deployment requirements

  • Record the complete transported kit and the permitted launch/landing area.
  • Define flight roles, task duration, return and reserve policy.
  • Count working batteries, approved charging equipment and available power.
  • Plan weather limits, battery handling and a grounded fallback.
  • Include a backup capture method and the handoff to the reviewer.

05 Software and networking can change the purchase

Retaining an accepted data workflow can be worth more than an isolated hardware feature. DJI confirms Matrice 4 Series support for Pilot 2 and FlightHub 2. That makes Matrice 4T a relevant starting point for an organisation already using those systems, but support does not establish that every desired function, licence, network connection or internal integration is included.

Document what the existing process actually requires: planning, permissions, asset identifiers, live sharing, original-file retention, analysis and report delivery. Test the intended versions and receiving software. A file exported successfully on the controller is only the beginning; it must remain useful to the people who accept the inspection evidence and store the resulting records.

When A-Mesh matters

Autel's A-Mesh should be evaluated as a compatible communications and collaboration architecture. If a mission genuinely needs multiple aircraft or relay arrangements, include the required aircraft, controllers, firmware, regional functions and personnel in the evaluation. A single 4T-XE quotation is not automatically the price of a complete networked operation. Verify connection behaviour and responsibility before planning around it.

A-Mesh and visual navigation address different problems. A communications network does not establish position; visual navigation does not guarantee a reliable communications path. Both depend on the delivered system and environment. The Autel A-Mesh guide develops that distinction without treating either capability as Canadian operating permission.

For data-sensitive buyers, compare the proposed workflow rather than awarding a security winner by brand. Identify where images, coordinates and account data go, who can access them, how files are retained and what happens without the network. Use the Canadian enterprise drone data-security checklist to structure the review. Equipment origin, dealer location and an encryption claim do not independently satisfy an organisation's procurement policy.

If a new platform changes analysis tools or staff routines, include that migration in the acceptance task and quotation. Retaining a familiar system is not automatically better either: an existing process that cannot deliver the required evidence should not be preserved solely to avoid change. The decision is whether the complete proposed workflow meets the documented requirement with an acceptable support burden.

Canadian costing

06 Compare complete systems, not two price labels

The current C$1,949 difference is a listed-price gap, not a verified difference in deployed-system cost. SpeedyDrone lists Matrice 4T at C$10,200 and the Autel EVO MAX 4T XE Bundle at C$12,149, checked October 13, 2026. Compare the included quantities, support and necessary additions before describing either offer as better value.

The Autel listing describes a standard smart battery, Smart Controller V3, charging equipment, a case, propellers and controller accessories, and a 64GB card, with regional or batch variation noted. It does not treat promotional bonus batteries or multi-chargers as permanent contents. For DJI, obtain the current written itemisation rather than deriving a bill of materials from the product image or a manufacturer's generic kit.

The Matrice 4T Standard versus Response Edition guide answers the DJI package question. This cross-brand comparison should not silently replace the standard offer with a response configuration or compare a bare system against an expanded field kit. Put the exact accessories required by the mission on both quotations.

A higher initial amount can be justified when it buys a required capability or reduces an evidenced operational burden. That is a purchasing judgement to document, not permission to invent a payback period. Record annual software, servicing, staff continuity and backup provisions as explicit assumptions. The Canadian drone-program budget resource provides the broader cost categories; it does not supply an automatic three-year total for these two offers.

07 Canadian operating and procurement checks

Neither aircraft's feature list grants permission to perform your intended operation. Their reference weights fall in Transport Canada's small-drone category. The applicable requirements also depend on how and where the drone is flown, people nearby, airspace and the safety features required for the operation. Basic, Advanced and Level 1 Complex are not interchangeable approvals.

Use the current Transport Canada operating-category guidance and confirm registration, pilot qualifications, any applicable aircraft declaration and airspace or operational authorisation. This guide does not establish either exact delivered model's eligibility for every Advanced or Complex task. A relay link or favourable transmission specification does not authorise BVLOS.

Keep aviation and purchasing reviews separate. A system may meet the capture requirement but still fail the asset owner's data policy, permitted-equipment rules or site access conditions. Obtain the organisation's actual criteria before ordering. Neither DJI nor Autel is presented here as universally eligible for Canadian government procurement, and a Canadian seller does not change the product's origin.

08 A mission acceptance matrix before you buy

Write the pass conditions before collecting comparison samples. Use a representative asset and the receiving team's real workflow, then record whether the required evidence can be obtained within the permitted operating conditions. A visually attractive demonstration should not become an after-the-fact substitute for an acceptance criterion.

  1. Define the requirementName the target, evidence, distance and reviewer.
  2. Capture a sampleUse the identified unit and representative conditions.
  3. Review the outputTest original files and document limitations.
  4. Scope the purchaseQuote the configuration that met the requirement.

Leave a condition open when it needs a supplier answer or field validation. Do not fill the matrix with manufacturer maxima as if those were your results. If the thermal files cannot be accepted, the system has not passed a radiometric reporting requirement even if the operator can see a hotspot. If networking is unnecessary, remove that complexity from the purchasing rationale rather than awarding unused features extra points.

For recurring inspections, record enough context to repeat the review: asset identity, capture position, actual unit and software, target state and the accepted deliverable. Before expanding to additional sites, check which assumptions still apply. A successful sample from one asset or lighting condition is not evidence that the same method works universally across the organisation.

09 Frequently asked questions

Is DJI Matrice 4T better than Autel EVO Max 4T-XE for inspection?

It depends on the evidence and workflow your team must accept. Matrice 4T is a useful starting point for an existing DJI operation needing visible context and thermal capture in a compact platform. EVO Max 4T-XE is worth evaluating when continuous optical zoom or a compatible network changes the task. Define the smallest target, permitted distance, files, operating conditions and complete kit first. Neither the listed price nor the maximum zoom setting establishes an overall winner.

Does the same 640 × 512 thermal resolution mean equal results?

No. Resolution identifies native sampling dimensions, not the number of useful pixels on your target or the reliability of a field measurement. Lens coverage, distance, focus, reflections, surface behaviour and the target's operating state matter. The receiving analyst also needs usable original files and the relevant settings. Compare representative outputs under agreed conditions and distinguish temperature measurement from simple thermal detection. A common detector-resolution figure alone cannot establish that both systems meet the same reporting requirement.

Does 160× hybrid zoom make Autel better for distant targets?

Not by itself. Maximum hybrid zoom is not a matched comparison of native detail. The visible image depends on optical framing, the sensor, exposure, movement and subsequent processing. A target may look larger on the screen without revealing enough information for the reviewer. Compare saved outputs of the same relevant feature from equivalent permissible positions. Autel's continuous optical zoom may suit the task, but the acceptance decision should rest on usable evidence rather than the largest displayed multiplier.

Which Fusion 4T-XE hardware version will I receive?

Confirm this in the written quotation and delivered-unit record. Autel's public materials contain conflicting visible-camera sensor-size descriptions, and its XE thermal page notes mixed frame-rate batches. Do not assume that an older brochure, a newer page or a similar 4T V2 model identifies the unit supplied. Request the aircraft generation, exact payload, applicable camera specification, battery and firmware. Test representative original files before accepting a performance conclusion based on any unresolved version-dependent specification.

Can A-Mesh or visual navigation replace operating approval?

No. A-Mesh concerns compatible communications and collaboration; visual navigation concerns positioning using the environment. Neither capability independently grants Canadian flight authority or removes pilot responsibilities. Define the intended operation, compatible system, conditions and failure response, then check the applicable Transport Canada requirements and site permission. A successful communications demonstration does not prove safe positioning, and stable positioning does not prove a reliable network. Keep technical acceptance and operating authorisation as separate parts of the evaluation record.

Can either model be treated as an all-weather aircraft?

No unrestricted all-weather conclusion is supported here. DJI says Matrice 4 Series is not waterproof. Autel's EVO Max manual describes protection conditions and warns that IP43 is not universal and may require customisation; it also does not recommend rain-day flights. Confirm the delivered configuration and its current manual, including controller and battery limitations. Plan the task around permitted conditions and a stop-work alternative rather than interpreting a protection label as permission to continue through precipitation.

Can my existing software use the delivered thermal files?

Verify this with original files from the proposed unit in your organisation's actual software version. Matrice 4T has a documented R-JPEG thermal capture path, but a complete review still needs appropriate settings and target context. For Autel, request a representative measurement-capable output and demonstrate the intended import, analysis and export. A coloured image, familiar filename extension or successful controller playback does not establish compatible re-analysis. Retain the sample, version record and reviewer decision with the procurement evidence.

What must be included in a comparable Canadian quote?

Align the aircraft and payload identity, controller, working battery quantities, charging equipment, case, required accessories and any network devices. List software, protection, maintenance, training and acceptance work separately, with their terms and exclusions. Confirm taxes, shipping and supply timing for the delivery destination. The current listed prices are useful starting points, not equivalent complete-system totals. Unknown charges should remain quotation questions rather than C$0 assumptions, and temporary promotional items should be identified explicitly instead of treated as permanent contents.

Choose the system that meets the acceptance conditions

The practical starting recommendation is Matrice 4T for a team whose existing DJI workflow and discrete visible-camera views meet the task. Move the 4T-XE higher on the shortlist when continuous optical framing or the required compatible network produces a demonstrable benefit. Change that recommendation if sample files, weather restrictions, purchasing policy or the full quotation fail the team's criteria.

Do not force a winner where the evidence is incomplete. A good buying decision identifies the configuration, the accepted output and the remaining limits. That record is more useful to the next operator, reviewer and purchasing manager than a specification score without a defined inspection job.
