DJI Matrice 5TD vs Matrice 4TD: Full Comparison

Enterprise aircraft · Upgrade decisions

Choose Matrice 5TD when finer native thermal detail, a longer telephoto lens and integrated sensing address a defined task—and a Dock 4 workflow fits your operation. Keep Matrice 4TD in the shortlist when handheld-controller flying, mobile deployment or an existing accepted inspection output matters.

DJI specifications checked October 14, 2026; Canadian offer, links and operating guidance rechecked October 15, 2026.

The DJI Matrice 5TD vs Matrice 4TD decision is more substantial than a camera upgrade. The 5TD has four times the native thermal pixel count, but DJI does not support handheld-remote-controller manual flight on it. FlightHub 2 still provides remote live flight controls; those are a different operating arrangement from arriving at a site with an RC Plus 2.

For an inspection company, thermal team or public-safety agency, the useful question is which aircraft can produce the required evidence under the conditions the team actually works in. Better sampling can be valuable. It does not automatically improve temperature accuracy, overcome an unsuitable working distance or make a remote site ready to fly.

This comparison centres on the aircraft: thermal sampling, visible imaging, ranging, weather limits, sensing and operator control. Dock compatibility appears where it changes the purchasing decision. It is not a battery-swap or installation comparison, and it does not treat the portable Matrice 4T as interchangeable with Matrice 4TD.

01 M5TD vs M4TD: specifications

These are manufacturer specifications, not SpeedyDrone flight-test results. Keep native camera resolution, processed output and laboratory endurance in separate categories. For sensing, compare a baseline 4TD with a baseline 5TD first, then check what an equipped 4TD already provides.

Sources: DJI Dock 3 / Matrice 4TD specifications, Dock 4 / Matrice 5TD specifications and the corresponding Dock 4 FAQ. Test conditions and regional restrictions apply. Both flight-time maximums run the battery from 100% to 0%; they are not usable inspection time with a return reserve.

The most consequential rows are thermal sampling and controller support. The temperature range and integrated sensors may open a useful evaluation case, but the newer model does not improve every parameter: the published wind resistance and IP rating are unchanged, and its thermal lens has a longer minimum focus distance.

Separate detail from diagnosis

02 What does the thermal upgrade actually change?

Matrice 4TD’s 640 × 512 native detector contains 327,680 pixels. Matrice 5TD’s 1280 × 1024 detector contains 1,310,720: twice as many samples across each dimension and four times the total count. Both specifications list a 45° diagonal thermal field of view. At comparable distance and framing, the newer array offers a finer sampling grid over the same scene.

That can help a reviewer separate a small warm area from its surroundings or see more structure within a thermal anomaly. It is a reason to request a representative capture, rather than evidence of four times the detection capability. A useful result still depends on target size, contrast, focus, viewing angle, atmosphere and the interpretation task.

Native pixels and UHR output are different measurements

The 4TD can produce 1280 × 1024 UHR infrared images from a 640 × 512 native array. The 5TD starts at 1280 × 1024 natively and can output 2560 × 2048 in UHR mode. A 4TD UHR file and a 5TD normal-mode file can therefore have the same dimensions while originating from different detector arrays.

Do not use exported image width as a substitute for native resolution. Ask which acquisition mode created a sample and retain its original file and metadata. UHR may be useful in a review workflow, but the larger output does not mean the older aircraft contains the newer native detector. DJI also gives mode-specific conditions for 4TD UHR video; compare the mode you intend to use.

More native samples over the same framing

Matrice 4TD

640 × 512 native

The small reference grid represents a coarser sampling footprint.

Matrice 5TD

1280 × 1024 native

Twice the samples per dimension can describe the same area more finely.

Original schematic by SpeedyDrone. The grids are simplified, with the same framing and target area; they are not thermograms, actual sensor arrays or measured detection results. More samples do not specify a temperature or guarantee that an anomaly will be identified.

Temperature accuracy does not increase fourfold

DJI publishes the same high-gain accuracy rating for both aircraft: ±2°C or ±2%, whichever is greater. The low-gain rating is also the same, ±5°C or ±3%, whichever is greater. A denser array can improve spatial information while the published measurement-error rating remains unchanged.

For electrical equipment, record operating load, surface properties, reflections and acquisition conditions alongside the thermal image. A small bright region is a reason for qualified investigation; it is not automatically a failing component. Compare suitable equipment under comparable conditions and have the responsible specialist determine what follow-up is needed.

The thermal measurement accuracy guide explains that measurement process in more depth. Here, the buying question is whether additional native detail changes the evidence your team can reliably obtain.

Check the minimum focus distance before buying

The thermal focus specification changes from 5 m to infinity on 4TD to 10 m to infinity on 5TD. A team working at short standoff distances should not assume the higher-resolution camera is automatically the better fit. Check whether the planned target distance is inside the specified focus range, then assess a real sample at that distance.

A safe inspection position must satisfy site and flight constraints as well as focus. Do not move closer to energized equipment merely to fill more of the frame. Conversely, if the safe working position is farther away, the native-detail increase may be useful—but only if the target still provides enough meaningful information after focus and quality checks.

Useful evidence at a lawful standoff

03 Telephoto and laser rangefinder

Matrice 4TD’s longest visible lens is 168 mm equivalent; Matrice 5TD’s is 252 mm equivalent. DJI describes the newer telephoto as 11×, compared with the older model’s nominal 7×. The telephoto field of view narrows from 15° to 9.7°. These lens differences are more useful to procurement than simply comparing the largest digital-zoom number.

A narrower view can help fill the frame with a distant component, label or incident detail. It also shows less surrounding context. A moving subject may be harder to keep framed, and vibration, light and atmospheric conditions can limit what is readable. Specify the actual detail your reviewer needs, then compare original photographs or recordings from a representative working position.

Keep visible zoom and thermal sampling separate. The longer RGB telephoto lens does not turn the infrared camera into an optical zoom lens with the same performance. Capture visible context and thermal evidence as complementary records, with the target and acquisition time identifiable in both.

Ranging is a separate capability from imaging

The stated normal-incidence laser range increases from 1800 m to 3000 m, but the specifications use different target conditions. DJI lists 20% reflectivity for 4TD, and 25% reflectivity with 8000 m visibility for 5TD. Rain and fog can degrade both. Do not convert those limits into a guaranteed range increase at your site.

A rangefinder helps document a target position or distance; it does not prove that the camera can identify a defect at the stated maximum range. Nor does a laser coordinate become a survey-grade deliverable without its own accuracy and positioning review. Test reflectivity, incidence angle and the complete coordinate workflow against the required output.

Plan accepted work, not a battery-empty maximum

04 Flight performance and environmental limits

The published flight-time figures are 54 minutes for 4TD and 59 minutes for 5TD. The 4TD test uses 12 m/s forward flight, photo mode without taking photos and obstacle-avoidance action switched off. The 5TD test uses 15 m/s forward flight without payload. Both are windless laboratory tests at 20 m above sea level, continuing from full battery to zero.

Those different conditions prevent a fair percentage claim for real inspection endurance. The published hover maximums are 47 and 55 minutes respectively, also laboratory, battery-empty results. They do not allocate time for a return reserve, useful capture, weather contingency or an interrupted mission.

Plan a representative route with travel, hover, image acquisition and return included. Accessories, wind, cold, aircraft condition and operating settings can change the available time. Compare accepted deliverables per sortie and the contingency margin, rather than promising an additional five minutes at every site.

Cold-weather capability has a useful boundary

The aircraft operating-temperature specification expands from −30°C to 50°C on 4TD to −40°C to 50°C on 5TD. For a Canadian site that regularly encounters temperatures below −30°C, that is a meaningful reason to evaluate 5TD. It does not establish safe flight in every combination of cold, snow, moisture and wind.

Both aircraft are IP55 and both list 12 m/s wind resistance. Ingress ratings are not unlimited-weather permissions. DJI’s 5TD manual requires checks for snow and ice on the dock, aircraft and propellers, and attention to motor warnings. Anti-icing propellers are maintained components, not a reason to ignore icing checks or an unsuitable weather forecast.

Source: DJI — manufacturer promotional image from the matching SpeedyDrone Matrice 4TD listing. It illustrates an inspection setting, not proof of weather clearance, a permitted separation distance or a Canadian operating result.

On 5TD, the 21 m/s maximum is currently limited to FlyTo tasks; other modes are capped at 15 m/s. On 4TD, 21 m/s forward flight is a Sport-mode figure, while DJI Dock operation supports Normal mode. Compare the actual task mode. A headline speed is neither a safe speed close to obstacles nor a response-time guarantee.

Included hardware is not a universal safety outcome

05 Obstacle sensing and AI

Matrice 5TD integrates vision, rotating LiDAR, mmWave radar and downward infrared sensing. Baseline Matrice 4TD uses omnidirectional binocular vision with downward infrared. However, its optional Obstacle Sensing Module adds LiDAR and mmWave radar. A fair upgrade evaluation must identify whether the existing 4TD already has that module.

Integrated hardware can simplify configuration, but compare its actual coverage and conditions. DJI’s wire-sensing figures specify cable diameter, direction, lighting or reflectivity. They are not guarantees that every conductor, thin branch or moving obstacle will be detected. The Dock 4 specifications also warn that mmWave functions can be restricted by country or region.

The spotlight configuration deserves particular attention. DJI states that turning on the AL2D spotlight disables visual obstacle sensing, leaving LiDAR and mmWave active and reducing omnidirectional sensing performance. More illumination does not mean every safety sensor continues to operate in the same way. Review that condition if night work and a spotlight are part of the proposed system.

For a utility route, separate the clearance plan from the sensing evaluation. Record the relevant obstacle types, viewpoints and operating limitations; do not rely on the aircraft to discover an unsafe route. Ground-obstacle sensing is also not proof of a Canadian aviation detect, alert and avoid capability.

Seventeen object types describes coverage, not accuracy

DJI describes 5TD onboard real-time recognition of 17 object types and infrared hotspot detection. Matrice 4TD already has AI-assisted recognition functions; this is not an upgrade from an aircraft with no AI. A larger supported class set can be useful when it contains the subjects relevant to the mission.

Ask which functions are included in the quoted version, where inference runs, what software is required and which integrations need separate work. Evaluate missed detections and false alerts using representative scenes. A model label or hotspot is an observation for review, not an engineering fault diagnosis or confirmation of an emergency. Assign a human reviewer and define the response when the model, network or integration is unavailable.

A control-system decision before a camera decision

06 Handheld control and Dock compatibility

DJI’s Dock 4 FAQ explicitly says Matrice 5TD does not support manual flight using a remote controller. Its user manual separately describes remote takeover and manual aircraft control through the FlightHub 2 virtual cockpit. Those statements are compatible: browser-based live controls are available, while a handheld RC flight arrangement is not supported.

If your team needs to transport the aircraft between sites and fly with an RC Plus 2, that requirement favours 4TD in this pair. Do not buy 5TD expecting to add the same controller later. Conversely, a fixed-site team already planning an authorized remote operation may find FlightHub 2 control suitable, subject to connectivity, access roles and documented emergency procedures.

If the requirement is a portable field aircraft or a heavier interchangeable payload, use the DJI enterprise aircraft selection guide to assess those alternatives alongside this dock-aircraft comparison.

Dock 3 supports the Matrice 4D series; Dock 4 is compatible only with Matrice 5TD and requires the O4 Ground Station. This is not a drop-in aircraft upgrade for a Dock 3 installation. A shared mounting-hole pattern or the ability to use a 4D-series aircraft for a Dock 4 site survey does not establish operational cross-compatibility.

Keep the compatibility check narrow and concrete: exact aircraft, dock, ground station, controller arrangement, firmware and recovery procedure. Ask what existing equipment can be reused in writing. A compatible aircraft-and-dock pairing still needs a functioning operational system.

Sources: Dock 3 controller FAQ, Dock 4 compatibility FAQ and Dock 4 user manual v1.0, page 52. The manual describes live flight controls, not an exemption from operator responsibilities.

Match the aircraft to the unresolved task

07 Which drone should you choose?

An industrial inspection contractor moving between sites should start with the controller requirement. If an RC-based crew and mobile equipment are essential, 4TD retains an important advantage. A more detailed thermal array does not compensate for the absence of the required operating arrangement.

A thermal team working from a repeatable, suitable standoff has a stronger case for evaluating 5TD. Specify the smallest area that must be distinguished, the focus distance, required raw files and review method. Upgrade when a sample demonstrates a useful evidence improvement, rather than when a larger image looks more impressive.

A public-safety agency planning fixed-site remote coverage can assess 5TD’s thermal, telephoto and integrated sensing together. Validate recognition against the relevant subjects and lighting conditions, and confirm who can take control and manage an interruption. An agency needing handheld incident deployment should retain 4TD as a candidate in this pair.

An existing Dock 3 / 4TD owner whose outputs already pass review need not replace the system because a successor exists. First identify the missed requirement: detail, framing, temperature envelope, configuration or operating model. If none changes the agency’s or maintenance team’s decisions, retaining the accepted system is a defensible procurement outcome.

Three questions before an upgrade

Need handheld RC flight?

Keep 4TD in the shortlist. 5TD does not provide that control arrangement.

Does 4TD miss a defined output?

Test whether 5TD native detail, telephoto or environmental capability fills that gap.

Can the whole operation support it?

Confirm Dock 4, connectivity, people, recovery and Canadian requirements before committing.

Original decision framework by SpeedyDrone, based on the verified control and capability differences. It is a procurement sequence, not a regulatory or performance approval.

Make the acceptance comparison reproducible

Give each supplier the same target task and acceptance conditions. Record working distance, target dimensions, loading or environmental context, capture mode, original files and the reviewer’s decision. Compare useful detail and measurement quality separately. Include a difficult condition that matters to the real programme, rather than reviewing only ideal promotional footage.

For control and sensing, document supported modes, configuration and recovery. Use a qualified team and a lawful test plan; an acceptance exercise is not permission to fly close to hazards or force an obstacle-avoidance intervention. The outcome should be a record of what meets the requirement, what fails it and what remains untested.

08 Buying considerations in Canada

DJI published the Dock 4 / Matrice 5TD launch and documentation on October 14, 2026. SpeedyDrone now has public listings for the 4TD package and the Matrice 5TD Combo with O4 Ground Station (NA). The 5TD configuration still needs a written Canadian quote; a confirmed selling price and delivery commitment were not established by this check. A global announcement does not establish Canadian stock, delivery timing or every regional function.

Request a written configuration covering the aircraft, required station/dock, batteries, accessories, software, connectivity, training and support. Confirm Canadian radio bands, mmWave availability and cellular support for the supplied version. Separate included functions from optional modules and custom AI work. Compare complete configurations, rather than a controller bundle with an unpriced dock aircraft.

Capability is separate from Canadian flight authority

Both aircraft are in the small-drone weight class. The operation’s location, airspace, proximity to people and VLOS/BVLOS arrangement determine the relevant requirements. For Advanced or Level 1 Complex operations, check the exact model and configuration’s applicable RPAS Safety Assurance declaration; meeting one requirement does not establish eligibility for every operation.

Level 1 Complex operations also require the appropriate pilot certificate, an RPAS Operator Certificate and the aircraft safety requirements. Some operations need a different approval route. Obstacle sensors, AI, EU class markings or advertised link range do not supply Canadian authority. This comparison does not confirm a 5TD declaration or approve a particular mission.

Regulatory sources checked October 15, 2026: Transport Canada operating categories, aircraft safety-assurance requirements and RPOC guidance. Our Canadian deployment and airspace guide helps structure that planning discussion.

Common procurement questions

Matrice 5TD vs Matrice 4TD FAQ

Is Matrice 5TD a direct upgrade for every Matrice 4TD user?

No. Its native thermal detail, telephoto and integrated sensing can address a specific gap, but it does not support handheld-controller flight and it requires a different dock pairing. Retain 4TD when that control arrangement or an existing accepted output remains the better fit.

Does four times the thermal pixel count mean four times the accuracy?

No. Native count increases from 640 × 512 to 1280 × 1024, while DJI publishes the same high-gain accuracy rating for both: ±2°C or ±2%, whichever is greater. Spatial detail and temperature error are separate measures.

Is 4TD UHR output equivalent to 5TD native resolution?

No. A 4TD UHR image can be 1280 × 1024, but its native array is 640 × 512. Matrice 5TD starts at 1280 × 1024 natively. Check acquisition mode and original metadata rather than comparing file dimensions alone.

Can Matrice 5TD be flown manually?

DJI does not support manual flight using a handheld remote controller. Its Dock 4 user manual does describe remote takeover and manual control through FlightHub 2 live flight controls. Those are different operating arrangements; do not assume an RC Plus 2 can be added to 5TD.

Can a Matrice 5TD operate from Dock 3?

The verified pairings are Dock 3 with the Matrice 4D series, and Dock 4 only with Matrice 5TD. The newer system is not a drop-in aircraft replacement for Dock 3. Confirm the complete supported configuration before an upgrade.

Does only Matrice 5TD have LiDAR and mmWave sensing?

No. Those sensors are integrated on 5TD, while 4TD can use the optional Obstacle Sensing Module. Compare the actual fitted equipment, sensing conditions and regional availability. Neither configuration guarantees detection of every obstacle.

Will Matrice 5TD always provide 59 minutes of useful inspection?

No. The published maximum is a windless forward-flight laboratory result ending at zero battery. A real mission needs travel, capture, return reserve and contingency. Its test speed also differs from the 4TD test, so the two maximums do not establish a universal field endurance gain.

What should a Canadian team request before buying?

Request the exact configuration, supported Canadian functions, complete cost, delivery terms and a representative accepted output. Confirm the operating category, applicable aircraft declaration, pilot qualifications and operator requirements separately. A new model or global announcement does not establish stock or permission to fly.
