Is DJI SDR Transmission 2 Worth the Upgrade?
For a new system, Gen 2 is the better long-term buy. It moves from 1080p60 H.264 at up to 20 Mbps to DCI/UHD 4K60, 10-bit HDR and H.265 at up to 50 Mbps. Every 136 g unit can be assigned as a transmitter or receiver, one transmitter can serve up to eight receivers, and Auto Channel 2.0 is designed for multi-group work.
For an existing Gen 1 owner, upgrade only when those changes solve a real bottleneck. Gen 1 already offers a 35 ms reference minimum transmission latency, direct SDI on its dedicated transmitter and receiver, and a capable 1080p workflow. Gen 2 is not a drop-in extension: DJI says it cannot link with the original SDR Transmission. The new main unit also drops built-in SDI, so an SDI workflow needs the separate Expansion Accessory Kit—and its Expansion Plate does not carry 4K input/output.

4K transmission does not make the camera record a better master. It changes the live image available to the people judging that recording. On a compatible 4K display, a focus puller can inspect eyelashes, fabric texture and product edges with more confidence. A director or client can evaluate fine production details without treating every soft-looking area as a possible transmission limitation. The advantage is most visible when the display is large enough, the source actually outputs 4K, and the viewing distance lets the extra detail register.
For a compact handheld monitor, a 1080p feed may already be adequate. If the display resolves only 1080p, or the camera output has been set lower, buying a 4K-capable link does not create 4K monitoring. The source format, cable, selected input, receiver output and display must all support the intended signal.
H.265 at 50 Mbps is part of the improvement
Gen 2 combines the higher resolution with H.265 encoding and a published maximum encoding bitrate of 50 Mbps. Gen 1 uses H.264 and lists a maximum 20 Mbps in SDR Control mode. Those numbers describe different generations and controlled conditions; they are not a direct promise of 2.5 times the visible quality in every location. Distance, interference, channel selection, subject motion and display processing still shape the result.
The right pre-shoot test is simple: run the exact camera output, cable, transmitter mode, receiver output and monitor you will use, then check focus, motion and reconnect behaviour. A specification table cannot validate the complete production chain.
Switchable TX/RX May Matter More Than 4K
The original system makes you buy and label a dedicated transmitter or receiver. Gen 2 makes the main units interchangeable: assign one as TX at the camera and another as RX at the monitor. That sounds minor until a crew changes shape during the day.
A third Gen 2 unit can be a receiver for a client monitor in the morning, then become the transmitter for a B-camera later. A spare no longer needs to match the failed side of the link. Rental houses and multi-camera teams can hold one pool of identical units instead of maintaining separate transmitter and receiver counts.
There are limits. One unit cannot be both ends of a wireless link at the same time, so a new basic link still needs two transceivers. Switching the role also does not create compatibility with Gen 1; DJI explicitly says the generations cannot pair.
SDI Is Now a Separate Cost—and a Separate Signal Decision
Gen 1 has SDI on the dedicated transmitter and receiver. Gen 2’s 136 g main unit has HDMI input/output and a lower USB-C port for DP input/output, power and communication. To add SDI, you need the DJI SDR Transmission 2 Expansion Accessory Kit, listed by SpeedyDrone at C$279. The kit includes the Expansion Plate, Transceiver Cage, cold shoe adapter, D-TAP-to-USB-C power cable and hex key; it does not include a transceiver.
The less obvious limitation is more important: DJI states that the Expansion Plate does not support 4K input/output. DJI’s Gen 2 specifications say 4K video is supported only through the main unit’s HDMI and lower USB-C connections. Therefore, “4K60” and “SDI” should not be treated as one combined promise. An SDI-based camera or monitor path must be planned around the supported format for the plate.
If your current Gen 1 rig depends on built-in SDI at both ends, add two questions before upgrading: how many Expansion Plates are required, and will the resulting signal format still meet the job? Include the added weight, power, cage and cable path—not just the C$279 kit price.
One Transmitter, Up to Eight Receivers
DJI says one Gen 2 transmitter can connect to as many as eight receivers, with upstream control available at each receiver. It also promotes up to five transmitters and 40 receivers working simultaneously. That is a clearer multi-position architecture for a focus puller, director, DIT, client village and additional departments.
The C$849 Combo provides two units: one TX and one RX. Every additional dedicated receiver position needs another C$479 transceiver plus its display, power and cable.

“Eight receivers” is not the same as eight passive viewers. Decide which operators need control authority and rehearse device switching before the shoot.

35 ms Is Not Zero-Lag—and Not an End-to-End Number
Both generations publish a 35 ms minimum video-transmission latency when camera and screen-display latency are excluded. Gen 2’s figure was measured with 1080p60 and 4K60 video. That makes 35 ms a useful reference for the wireless transmission stage, not a complete glass-to-glass result.
The camera may buffer its output. The receiving monitor or tablet may add processing. Frame-rate conversion, LUTs and capture devices can add more. A focus puller therefore should not read “35 ms” as a guarantee that the image arrives 35 ms after the real-world action. For a latency-sensitive rig, test the complete chain and compare it with the Gen 1 setup you already know.
Ronin Compatibility and Camera Control
Supported Ronin connections
DJI lists RS 5, RS 4 Pro, RS 4 and RS 3 Pro, along with Ronin 2 and Master Wheels, in the Gen 2 ecosystem. The cable path is not identical for every stabilizer.
- RS 5: the included USB-C firmware-update cable can connect the transceiver’s USB/DP port to the gimbal’s multifunction port.
- RS 4 Pro, RS 4 and RS 3 Pro: DJI requires the separately sold SDR Transmission 2 Gimbal Control Cable (USB-C to CAN).
- Expansion Plate: use the correct plate port for the stabilizer; the RS 5 side port and the lower ports for the other listed RS models serve different connection paths.

Gen 1 Owner Upgrade Verdict
Upgrade if monitoring detail is the bottleneck
If the crew is regularly punching in, second-guessing focus or feeding a large 4K client display, the 4K60/10-bit HDR path can be a working improvement—not just a bigger number. Confirm that the camera, main-unit connection and monitor keep the chain in 4K.
Upgrade if equipment roles change from job to job
Switchable transceivers reduce inventory friction. For a team that regularly reassigns units between A-camera, B-camera, focus and client positions, one common hardware pool and up to eight controlled receivers can justify the move.
Keep Gen 1 if direct SDI and 1080p are already enough
Gen 1 remains rational when its 1080p60 feed meets the monitoring need and built-in SDI keeps the rig simple. Gen 2’s minimum latency figure is not lower, and moving SDI to an Expansion Plate adds cost and hardware.
Treat migration as replacement, not expansion
Because the generations cannot link, the first Gen 2 purchase must establish both ends of the new link. A C$479 single is an add-on for an existing Gen 2 system; the C$849 Combo is the realistic starting point for a new two-end setup. Add Expansion Kits, additional receivers, cables and power only after drawing the full signal path.
